Doesn't matter what you think or do imo the filesharers are in a win/win position. They get all their music free of charge now and as it goes along I am afraid that everyone will give up on the idea of charging for music all together eventually. I have seen this coming for years and I don't see anything coming along that is going to change this eventuality. Honestly I feel like it could possibly be a good thing for music in the end and I am a big believer in the ends justifies the means but in this case I don't know! It is what it is, very frustrating.

A lot of people I know who download illegaly use the excuse "well it's all promotion for them , they get people coming to the gigs" but it's not really their decision to make is it. If an artist/label decides to release a record and put a price tag on it then it's not the illegal downloader's decision as to whether it has a monetary value or not. I buy my music and it seems like a lot of other people here do so that's good and we just have to hope that there will always be decent people who are willing to show support for an artist who's work they appreciate.

I don't pay for the right to listen to it, I pay for the record.

isn't there talk of introducing suspensions from the internet if people are caught doing this like they have just (i think) introduced in Ireland. This would prevent most I think. Not sure that it is really realistic though. People are so reliant on the internet that I think it would just be too harsh a penalty. Increasing the quantity of fining that goes on would be more appropriate though i guess this is not too viable or it would already be happening.

Downloading is never going to replace vinyl anyhoo. better quality and it is just a lot nicer, for want of a better word, to hold something you have purchased in your hand. That is one thing that downloading has resulted in, a general 'cheapening' of music, not just in a monetary sense. But this has good points as well for example dubstep as a genre would be nowwhere near as popular and widespread if it wasn't for downloading. I didn't have the money to invest in finding out about a new genre I may or may not like when i got into dubstep, I still don't. CD's and Vinyl are ridiculously expensive. Record labels need to accept that dling is happening and react to it. better to get 10 people buying an album at £8 then 1 at £15. Then they should charge more for playing. If you have heard the music you are a lot more likely to go see an artists at a gig then visa versa.

This is a very pertinent topic when it comes to dubstep, and is one of the reasons why I love this scene so much (seriously.) File sharing has gotten so big, that, especially for underground genres, its coming to the point where people are buying records for the right reasons again. Say you find this artist and a few beats you hear are great. They produce at home (no big record deal, studio, radio play etc), and finally get a 12'' signed or something. If you pirate their stuff (I have done this before), it's terrible in so many ways. What people need to realize is that it all comes full circle in a scene that's relatively small. Guy with little/some cash makes big, revolutionary tune. Hopefully they have some wits about them and do a little bit of sharing/promo with trusted people, it gets out on Rinse/SubFM/Radio/mixes for download on the internet. When all the hype builds and you're excited about having it yourself, please buy the record either vinyl or digital (whichever you prefer, if you are a dj etc), because you will see this same artist and those with a similar attitude continue to make music, hopefully which you'll like. In dubstep, big bucks are not made from music. People will not stop creating it because of a love for the music, and for the people who make it, regardless of the illegal activity that happens on the internet. And honestly, legal mp3 download stores are great and charge a minimal fee for the dl anyway.

That said, people will never stop file-sharing either. It's in our nature to share and copy things as social beings, and some people either consciously or not will share tunes without permission, either before or after release depending on a leak. This serves as promotion in terms of hype and information, but isn't really helping the artist push forward. Do you really care about the music you listen to? Do you want the people who make it to continue to make it/eat? BUY REKKIDS YALL .

Would be interested to know whether artists make most of their money from playing out or selling records. i would presume it is the latter as I think this is the case in music generally?

Really everyone is a pirate. If you say you're not, you're a liar. How many people can say they have never burned a cd or copied a tape for a friend in their life? Or how many people can say they've never watched a copyrighted film online? Sorry if people get pissed about a million more people hearing there music and then paying to see them live, which in turn gets them more bookings. I personally wont pay $2 for one 320. WAY overpriced imho.

I'll pay $5 - $10 for vinyl that wont get wiped off my hard drive when my computer crashes. And I do pay to see GOOD artists. I support the scene and artists I like.

2 bucks is a steal for someones hard work, you obviously have no clue what goes into the process of just MAKING the tune let alone putting it up for sale on the digi sites.

FYI I know exactly what goes onto making a tune. And I'd be flattered if my tunes were all over pirate sites. Then I'd enjoy the bookings I got from the fame.

But at the end of the day it all boils down to principals

i happen to download FLAC rips of the vinyls i purchase so i don't have to rip them myself. i can pick at least 20 older releases that i can't find rips for. my copy of the Eleven Tigers CD came today and i haven't seen a rip anywhere for that. i don't see what the problem is. if you don't like the money you're getting enough to keep making music, then stop.
