Fat people is a product of population control.
You think saturated fats existed in the 1960's?

Re: Hey Ev'ry One
it has less to do with anthropology and more to do with psychology...boxxy wrote: racism is a product of natural selection? i don't follow the logic, i thought different races developed through micro evolution depending on environment? how does that translate into it being beneficial for us to to "form in-groups and out-groups?" not having a go at you, just trying to understand what you mean.... i've only taken 1 anthropology class![]()
on a side note, how did we go from hey er'ry jaun to racism?
yes, micro evolution took place all across the globe, but think back to nomadic and conquering times..
if someone who was different than you wandered into your camp, it would be beneficial to question their intentions and to make sure they're not a scout with a conquering army behind them.. it's natural, but only beneficial in certain instances like this... since the really fearful and violent cultures did this and defended themselves, it became hard wired... not really a good thing in this day and age, but helped them back then so it stuck.
it's more of a product of seperation. people like to view themselves as superior since they assume they way they operate is the way things should be, and will be more inclined to find negative aspects in another culture rather than focusing on the positive. people have a hard time accepting that their logic may not be the best logic, since it feels so internally "right"
if a culture is very different, it could make you uncomfortable and confused if you were immersed in it, since many procedures may seem odd since you're used to your in-group
i'm not very good at describing it, so if you're curious, i urge you to read this: http://www.apa.org/pi/oema/resources/br ... acism.aspx
it includes studies, theories, and dissertations on the psychology of racism (prejudice)... really fascinating

Re: Hey Ev'ry One
The thought that evolutionarily distinct people developed manifestly different morphologies but some how psychological mechanisms remained identical across all peoples requires a pretty profound unmotivated leap of faith.

Re: Hey Ev'ry One
pick up a psychology book. read it. learn the difference between the brain functions involved in emotions and actions and those which process and determine language.nowaysj wrote:The thought that evolutionarily distinct people developed manifestly different morphologies but some how psychological mechanisms remained identical across all peoples requires a pretty profound, unmotivated leap of faith.
psychology is deeper than morphology ... i.e. every culture can recognize a smile and what it means, even in deep jungle cultures... theres only one or two cultures in the entire world where nodding your head means no and shaking it means yes...
"identical" is a stretch... no one said identical.
Re: Hey Ev'ry One
It's pretty doubtful that we don't share a common ancestry, and all that comes with that. But it is also equally clear that we all developed different physical and psychological forms to adapt to our differing environments.

Re: Hey Ev'ry One
true, im glad you recognize common ancestry, and you are correct in assessing that there are differences in psychological forms between cultures..nowaysj wrote:It's pretty doubtful that we don't share a common ancestry, and all that comes with that. but those are small tweaks in the broader scope of psychology... i was referring to the universals, in particular in-groups.
and in-groups / out-groups exist in every single culture, implying that there is a deeper psychological drive in that regard.
and in-groups are certainly not the only universal... there's pleeeeenty (like smiling/crying, as i mentioned above),
-hierarchies,
-gender stereotypes (Williams, J. E., & Best, D. L. (1990). Sex and psyche: Gender and self viewed cross-culturally. Newbury Park, CA: Sage.),
-individualism-collectivism (Hofstede, G. (2001). Culture's consequences: Comparing values, behaviors, institutions, and organizations across nations (2nd ed.). Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage.),
-personality studies, etc etc etc

I'm fat because I'm surrounded by awesome food...
I just had homemade Costa Rican food for the first time yesterday...
pass that up - no way..
You wanna cancel my "inferior genetics" for that - go on then
You should be laughing with me trying to descend the mountains of good food..
My metabolism is plump.
