The main thing that I learned about conspiracy theory is that conspiracy theorists actually believe in a conspiracy because that is more comforting. The truth of the world is that it is chaotic. The truth is, that it is not the Jewish banking conspiracy or the grey aliens or the 12 foot reptiloids from another dimension that are in control. The truth is more frightening, nobody is in control. The world is rudderless. - Alan Moore
Re: Cool quotes
Is that quote the absolute truth though, or is that a quote a means to find comfort within your own world view?wub wrote:The main thing that I learned about conspiracy theory is that conspiracy theorists actually believe in a conspiracy because that is more comforting. And to believe no body is in control (or at least trying to gain control) is to hand away your own control.

and what about the family trees of politicians being traced back to one common ancestor?
thats two very conservative examples that point to it not being chaos at all

yeah but they don't control everything. I think the quote, and i may be wrong, is referring to how it is more comforting to believe that there is some massive organisation planning and carrying out terrorist attacks rather than just some random person like you or me using readibly available resources to kill alot of people. This is a somewhat related article about the psychology of conspiracy theories which is quite interesting. http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the ... y-theoriesPistonsbeneath wrote:You can't deny surely Wub the Bankers run everything due to having all the money?d-T-r wrote:Is that quote the absolute truth though, or is that a quote a means to find comfort within your own world view?wub wrote:The main thing that I learned about conspiracy theory is that conspiracy theorists actually believe in a conspiracy because that is more comforting. I'd disagree on this.d-T-r wrote:And to believe no body is in control (or at least trying to gain control) is to hand away your own control.
The idea of chaos gives me much more reassurance. Whilst I (or anyone else) may not be in control of the world, I am in total control of myself within it.
There is enough of an open-ended aspect in some of these 'theories' to allow any idea to find some weight or explanation somewhere. People look for what is comforting to them. If people want there to be a conspiracy then they'll find the examples to prove their cause. I'm not dismissing the beliefs of others entirely, however, but for me it's not something I think I can subscribe to.Pistonsbeneath wrote:You can't deny surely Wub the Bankers run everything due to having all the money?
This brings me nicely to another quote (albeit not sure I'd call this one 'cool' in the terms of this thread);

There is no accounting for nepotism/breeding.Pistonsbeneath wrote:and what about the family trees of politicians being traced back to one common ancestor?

"Nothing is exactly as it seems, nor is it otherwise." ~Alan Watts
"What appear to be faults in others may actually be reflections of our own emotional afflictions". ~ Geshe Dhargyey
"Because your own strength is unequal to the task, do not assume that it is beyond the powers of man; but if anything is within the powers and province of man, believe that it is within your own compass also." ~ Marcus Aurelius
"And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury
Signifying nothing." ~ Shakespeare
"I wonder if heaven got a ghetto?" ~ Tupac Shakur
"If it bleeds we can kill it." ~ Dutch

Key word being reassurance.Fair enough though-what is the world but 8 billion 'myselfs" controlling themselves and having their perception of self control influenced by internal & external factors and also other 'myself's".wub wrote:I'd disagree on this.d-T-r wrote:And to believe no body is in control (or at least trying to gain control) is to hand away your own control.

As far as all the conspiracy shit go's anyway, the irony is that the biggest injustices and things that need addressing are right in front of our eyes and need no repackaging under the 'conspiracy' moniker. Too many people look for the details of hidden conspiracies and in turn ignore the world being pulled from under our feet from a perspective free from the need of any additional conspiracy theories.wub wrote: There is enough of an open-ended aspect in some of these 'theories' to allow any idea to find some weight or explanation somewhere. Water being the last thing a fish perceives is a good example in this context. With us being the fish and society being the water. We perceive it to the extent of navigating thru it and participating , but we We have no other version of society to compare our own with, so we assume this must be as 'good as it can get" or that this is all there is.

I could never do any of them anyway - was always some insane combination of buttons to remember. When "Finish him" came up I always ended up giving them a jab or kick to the shins or something equally disappointing

It was all about the crouching uppercut if you couldn't remember a proper finisher.
