This thread has an awesome conversation going. What rez said in the first page is exactly what I was thinking.

I think what Skrillex is doing is awesome, I just hate that he's a cocky bastard about his success. Especially when there's producers doing a lot better things that him. I loved his Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites release, very influential to me as a newer dubstep/electro producer and a fan of genre-bending. The difference here from me and a usual fan, however, is that I've done the research and introduced myself to the genre and its variety in it's entirety. You gotta give the guy credit for coming up with some songs that are successful for doing what everyone else has been toying with. The SM&NS melody is a killer.

Folks like Skrillex are ruining dubstep's image.

Let me just say I originally came from listening to hiphop. I still listen to loads of hiphop. Well, at a certain point I started listening to Dizzee Rascal, and that got me into grime. After a while I heard about dubstep, and how it was similar to grime. I decided to check out dubstep, and people told me to look up Rusko. I looked up Rusko, and I really disliked it (people made me believe that Rusko's ''Pro Nails'' remix defined dubstep). Some time later I heard about Burial, and I was blown away by him (took me a while to get into it tho'). I noticed that Burial was labelled as dubstep too, so I decided to give dubstep another try. I started listening to Kode9 and a lot of other things Hyperdub put out, and I actually really liked it. Only lately I've really started listening to people like Digital Mystikz and Loefah (shortly before I started posting here).

I know a couple of people that are like 'big' in the 'dubstep' scene out here (in Holland), and when I play them my tunes they ask me where the wobble's at.

A lot of people I know talk about how they listen to dubstep all day long, saying they make dubstep, and they still got the nerve to ask me who's Mala. That's just making me sad.

Sorry for sharing my entire life story here, I just wanted to say this.

I have not heard ANYONE who sounds ANYTHING like skrillex.

It really is a thing of beauty the way he chops samples and makes em sound like something really important is happening, then procedes to melt faces with about a million differnt sounds at once, all very well mixedand timed.

I'm not gonna go down the whole 'you are wrong because you dont like skrillex' route. That's a dumb way to be. But calling his music generic blows me away.

He could be using a billion different sounds at once, it would still be the same noisy, soulless garbage that it is...

Something like this, on the other hand, has TONS of different samples subtly edited, but best of all, listen to that GROOVE...

See that's the problem. For me it sounds like just throwing loads of sounds together for no reason aside from that it self. It's ironically very predictable thanks to it's attempts to be all crazy. None of the sounds themselves are particularly special and it has no life in it's rhythms or arrangements. It's technically well produced but that is in the same way that pop music technically is. It still feels very lifeless. His music also gives off a real horrible vibe/attitude/aesthetic also. Just rubs me the wrong way.
