Anybody else get pissed off at people that only dj? Of course not?!?! Why would you.
If a man produce's or not is irelevant, If he can play a wicked set, and he's made the effort to link up with big producers
and managed to get exculsive tracks b4 they get released then go for it!
They practice for many hours of the day, and sell out huge shows across the world! Its been a culture/lifestyle for over 20 years!
And when you say
them up into some kind of super hybrid version. It was insane!

Saying 'who wants to listen to it ??' is quite a naive statment! Sorry to point this out, but it got to me. There's thousands of people that have made turntablism their life,VirtualMark wrote: Yeah theres obviously skill to doing something like that... but the thing is, who wants to listen to it?? I just like to listen to a track, not listen to scratching and juggling every two seconds.

You've gotta start somewhere. DJing shows you have passion for a particular genre or electronic music as a whole. What's wrong with that? I DJ'd only for years, it wasn't until I found dubstep that I fancied having a go at production.
I don't see what your beef is. Stop moaning and listen to some tunes.

You may want to look at the history of dancehall culture to understand why we have dj's in the first place.

This was 'Turntable Culture' way before it was 'EDM Culture' or 'Rave Culture'... Tablism is at the route of what your doing, as a modern producer... You might not wanna listen to it, but some of us live for it... Not everyone got into dance music through dubstep.
Dont hate the DJ. Youll be hard pressed to get on Radio 1 without being in a mix.

I was saying beatmatching isnt so easy when the records arent standard, quantized, tempos... Some of you really have to learn to read properly before trying to stick up for yourselvesRmoniK wrote:i (and the TS for that matter) never said it was easy, we said beatmatching is easy. I don't mind DJs... hell, I'm getting into DJ'ing myself, but I'm glad that the internet has killed the over reliance on DJ support for tunes to get out. I remember this one jungle documentary where DJ Rap would boast that 'if we (the DJs) don't like it, no one's going to hear it'. It's good that the internet has leveled the playing field and lets people decide for themselves what they can and can't enjoy without having some self-proclaimed elite club of DJs decide what's ok to like and what ins't.

Actually his point still stands - unfortunate that it is. DJs have to want to like your tunes before they play them out, else why would they play them in their sets? What the internet has done, has simply made more underground music more accessible.Genevieve wrote:I don't mind DJs... hell, I'm getting into DJ'ing myself, but I'm glad that the internet has killed the over reliance on DJ support for tunes to get out. Oh no, I'm not against DJs tunes not playing tunes they don't like. That's all great. I'm just saying, the internet leveled the playing field, so now, people have more access to music without having to rely on the DJ to decide what's 'good' and what 'isn't. I can imagine very well that in the sound system culture in the hardcore/jungle era, DJ play is everything and producers would have very few other means to get their tunes heard.amphibian wrote:Actually his point still stands - unfortunate that it is. Just a random thought sparked by the subject of this thread and some memory of a jungle documentary.

The dj is a better method. The Internet has spawned the YouTube step fenom. I could do without that tbh.

Re: Anybody else get pissed off at people that only dj?
Plain and simple it is just easier to be a DJ these days.. and it's becoming increasingly popular. I'm usually a pretty cool head but honestly it does kind of get to me when I see 100 random DJ kids pop up over night and play rinsed out tunes back to back for a bunch of toddlers. I know I shouldn't be mad... but it it just really kind of cheapens the experience for me. I've been DJing since 1996 about, and I just remember it being a much more personal decision back then. I honestly think the price of buying vinyl kept a lot of people away from even attempting it. So, in conclusion I try not to be mad and encourage the younger set..but yeah..
Re: Anybody else get pissed off at people that only dj?
see I don't even see that as a reason - just your own jealousy/envy.etc. manifesting itself as an outward attack. You're aware of it though, which is good
I find most people who have an issue with technology and making it easier to get started, generally are the people who are unwilling to grow with the technology.
yes - beatmatching is a lot easier these days
yes - software makes it too easy
but...
It introduces more features and the ability to be MORE creative with your sets, not less.
More planning is required in order to cram that creativity in
The DJs who adopt these technologies and really push the limits (I know of a few who are unknown who are doing some crazy shit!!!), are going to be THE DJs to watch in the next few years.
Technology it advances, it makes certain things easier, while opening up a whole new world of opportunity. Those who don't grow with it fall behind.
All said and done - there is a certain quality/feel of playing with vinyls that you just don't get in the newer forms of spinning. It's both a pro and a con (not mixing with vinyls).

Re: Anybody else get pissed off at people that only dj?
The problem I think is that back in the day most people didn't buy a few records and then rush out into the scene looking for gigs... some did but I think a lot of people wanted to wait until they were up to scratch with beat-matching and phrasing and then I think the extra time in the bedroom helped to increase the collection and you would start to develop a knack for track selection. Now I think people just learn how to warp a track and they are out gigging, not knowing enough about track selection, moving a crowd and all that. It's not a knock in Ableton dj's, there are good and bad dj's just like good and bad vinyl djs. I just don't want to hear a dj that hasn't put the time in.
Re: Anybody else get pissed off at people that only dj?
Oh I have no doubt a lot of them are probably like wtf that isn't music. But some others get it. Just like a lot of sculptors probably would look down on a CGI artist or something. Whatever.nylle wrote:i wonder if people who play in orchestras get pissed at people who only produce electronic music
