Late 2007.

Sonar, downtown Baltimore.

Went to what I thought was a D&B show, heard totally new genre of music that blew my mind. THE BASSLINE IS THE TUNE! :o

Asked the DJ what it was, “Dubstep,” asked for names of some people to look up… “Skream

Didn’t like Skream, but iTunes > “People also bought…” led to…

Box of Dub” > Burial > Mind blown again…

Quit D&B cold turkey, never looked back...

2007. Before that only real dance music was breaks, and dnb (mostly dnb). Couldn't stand all the hype shit was coming out, so didn't give dubstep the time of day, tarred it all with the same brush. That is until my mate had Allstars 6 blazing out his system at his house (pretty bright lights). Asked him what this music was and he said dubstep. Next day went straight to bristol and bought it. To this day still one of my most played cd's.
About two weeks later went to a RUN night in bristol, mainly for the dnb, but thought I'd go see what was up in the dubstep room. N-TYPE was playing and I loved the way he mixed (not to disimilar from dnb imo), so caught that. a week later got allstars 5 and cained that. and just went on from there.

I'd say mid 2008, I used to listen to DnB and I eventually downloaded Rinse 02 and Fabriclive 37, loved the sounds and started getting interested.

Started DJing April 2010, my first 2 Vinyls were Skream - Dutch Flowers and Skream - Midnight Request Line.

Don't remember if it was '08 or '09 when The Prodigy started doing dubstep versions of their tunes to play live. That made me aware of dubstep but I'd only heard some Skream or Rusko and wasn't into it. In '09 Sub Focus's Coming Closer was a tune and a half but that still didn't get me into it. Then, someone pointed me to Nero (back when they were good) and EmalKay, and I sort of went from there. I wasn't too into the harder stuff until I heard SKisM's remix of Boom then I was hooked on that.

probs about summer/autum 2006/2007, was listening to alot of 50/60s ska/reggae at the time. a pal sent me milanese "mr bad news" and i got captured by the gnarlyness of it. started noticing other tunes with a similair beat (eg night) then heard a skream track in my mates car and got fully into bassweight business. liked alot of jump up, not so much anymore but still like certain bits.

I truely got into the sound around winter '09. A few friends kept insisted it was heavy so I did a bit of research and found this website. Went to the mix section and downloaded a mix by Forensics that had Goat Stare and Distance - Cyclops in it. :o

That was me converted.

Skream - Colourful and what was then (on youtube anyway) called Superfly - which I think was released as Hedd Banger.

Think it was around Spring '08

First heard Dubstep in 2005 with 2 annoying MCs over the top of it. I wasn't really listening to them though, but I did think it was some crazy slow DnB or something. I was 16 and still didn't have much of a clue about what I was hearing or who was making it.

The first tunes I heard and knew what they were was the Vex'D Degenerate album, Loefah's remix of I - Skream, old stuff on hotflush like search and destroy, toasty etc, midnight request line, Paul Rose/Scuba's N1 Mix and then discovered Digital Mystikz.

My taste moved through the dark/deep stuff onto some of the rowdier stuff but since 07/08 have been far more into the musically influenced side. I like to think I like and DJ every side of the sound (minus the bro step shite), I still like some rowdy, dance floor based tracks but at the end of the day they have to be well produced and have some kind of groove to them, not just all out ear fuck*ng noise.

Favourite producers now include: Silkie, Quest, Heny G, Vivek, J.Sparrow, Ruckspin, Headhunter, Lurka, JazzyJazzy, Albert, DFRNT, Commodo, J:Kenzo, Benny Page, Joker, Kromestar, Jay5ive, Orphan101, Shortstuff.......I could go on for hours here as I feel that Dubstep is still full of amazing producers, pushing boundaries like never before.

It gets to me a little that the more commercial side of the scene in some cases is overshadowing the huge amount of talent on offer but realistically I don't care where the scene itself is going as long as there are still enough tracks I enjoy to fill my sets. As far as the DJs at the top, for the most part the biggest names in my eyes are people who have been at the top since I discovered the sound, I don't mean they are my favourites necessarily, just the people who are at the top of the pile: DMZ, Skream, Benga, Hatcha, N Type, Kode 9, Distance, Caspa, Rusko and Chef.

My two cents anyway

late 2008 properly

i was aware of it through grime sets like fukk radio cos they'd play morning request line...and dubplate drama played rutten in one of their episodes in the first season...my teenage dumbass self thought it was just next level grime instrumentals so i never really paid it any mind until somehow i heard skreams in for the kill remix and nero's this way...and then i found haunted through the wiki dubstep page loool and that track changed everything for me and i was hooked...

not getting into the scene around 04/05 is one of the worst mistakes i think i've made in my young life lol...so much music i love now i missed then, even tho i'd have been too young to go to the raves until late 06

can't remember what year but the first dubstep i heard was Vex'd on Resonance FM.
still remains to this day one of my favourite producers (as a duo or individually as they are now). The mix still stands as one of the best I've ever heard, and the live show was incredible. So glad I got to see it. The emotion they could create in tracks was second to none too. That's why I was so happy to have Jamie mix my first release.

Favourite tune at that point was definitely what later turned out to be Dakimh "Done". Still gets me going to this day.

Another tune that got me was when I ended up zoning out to Mala at the first Exodus (before it moved into the main room) and he dropped "Alicia"...

first tune i heard and thought i must listen to more of this, but didnt know what it was, must have been benga - crunked up at some point in 2008. i didnt know it at the time but i already had a few dubstep tunes in my itunes library hidden as remixes. i think the first dubstep tune i probably listened to must have been 2000F remix of natasha's idlebrand i byen and RUF - want some crack (oldest tunes i can find in my library), then maybe some of high rankin's old old dark stuff.

end of 2008 is when i got into it proper, met a kid at college who mixed dnb and had been into dubstep for a while, remember talking to him about it and he played me bar 9 - midnight on his phone and then opened my eyes to the scene, and thats when i got obsessed. first night i went to was allout 2 i think at digital in brighton in march last year, a week before i turned 18, managed to get in with brothers ID. taste has moved away from grimey stuff (aka brostep shite as its become) since the start of last year.

major nostalgic feelings thinking about it now, remember my first trip to my mates house like 30 miles away, sitting there as he mixed on vinyl (something i had never seen before with any genre of music) and being amazed by it all.
