First heard Dubstep in 2005 with 2 annoying MCs over the top of it. I wasn't really listening to them though, but I did think it was some crazy slow DnB or something. I was 16 and still didn't have much of a clue about what I was hearing or who was making it.
The first tunes I heard and knew what they were was the Vex'D Degenerate album, Loefah's remix of I - Skream, old stuff on hotflush like search and destroy, toasty etc, midnight request line, Paul Rose/Scuba's N1 Mix and then discovered Digital Mystikz.
My taste moved through the dark/deep stuff onto some of the rowdier stuff but since 07/08 have been far more into the musically influenced side. I like to think I like and DJ every side of the sound (minus the bro step shite), I still like some rowdy, dance floor based tracks but at the end of the day they have to be well produced and have some kind of groove to them, not just all out ear fuck*ng noise.
Favourite producers now include: Silkie, Quest, Heny G, Vivek, J.Sparrow, Ruckspin, Headhunter, Lurka, JazzyJazzy, Albert, DFRNT, Commodo, J:Kenzo, Benny Page, Joker, Kromestar, Jay5ive, Orphan101, Shortstuff.......I could go on for hours here as I feel that Dubstep is still full of amazing producers, pushing boundaries like never before.
It gets to me a little that the more commercial side of the scene in some cases is overshadowing the huge amount of talent on offer but realistically I don't care where the scene itself is going as long as there are still enough tracks I enjoy to fill my sets. As far as the DJs at the top, for the most part the biggest names in my eyes are people who have been at the top since I discovered the sound, I don't mean they are my favourites necessarily, just the people who are at the top of the pile: DMZ, Skream, Benga, Hatcha, N Type, Kode 9, Distance, Caspa, Rusko and Chef.
My two cents anyway
