I watched that movie very closely and have been producing for around 8 months now...I'm trying my best to translate what he did to doing that in ableton with massive (it's what I know the best). Here's what I have so far....BTW, anything in parentheses ( ) is something I'm not clear about...

@ around 30s he plays the synth..I can get a similar sound in massive, so that's ok.
@ about 1:00 he starts to load (notes?) into the mpc...Is this loading a 'D' and 'F' note of the SAME SOUND?...this I need a bit of clearing up.
@ 1:13 he says that he now takes the sample and chops it up in the mpc..what is the equivalent of doing this in ableton? I know how to bounce stuff to audio and load into a sampler. I also know how to chop audio, but I'm not clear on the purpose of doing that. How big are the chops..1 bar, 1/2 bar, 1/8 bar etc...? Is it better to keep them the same length? My understanding of this stage is: You come up with a gnarly sound in massive, and bounce out say a 'D' note for 4 bars. You then chop up the audio into desired lengths and rearrange them into a bassline? And this works because when you put movement in the sound (originally in massive via lfos, envelopes, etc), there are different pitches of the sound and you play off them by triggering different starting points that play the pitches of the sound...??

In dubstep the bass is the melody. There is one thing I'm not clear on and that is how you derive the melody through different techniques. As in, do you make the melody from playing different NOTES of a sound generated in massive? Or do you play different pitches of a resampled 'D' note from the chopped up audio bits (like I mentioned above)? Or can you do both as long as you stay in key?

And of course you can continue to process the sounds further making them more dramatic etc,...but it's mainly those things I'm mostly unclear about...I have yet to fully grasp this concept and would be incredibly appreciative of any and all the help anyone could lend.

Regards.

mushroom i agree with that your saying, and agree with some of it. but for one your coming at it in the wrong way. also your trying to say that people need to have more interesting live performances, but that doesn't mean they have to produce there songs a certain way...you can produce it in whatever way makes you happy.

iv seen this vid before you posted it actually and liked it. i think its a good method to get really shopped up original sounding bits, but it is still nice to draw in midi for certain things.

also just to note, i saw doorley and rusko the other day, and doorley was using more bells in whistles, like beat juggling and a lot of scratching and shit but it didnt make the show any better, if anything it made it worse. plus he didnt look up at the crowd once. rusko on the other hand kept it pretty simple and bounced around a whole lot, engaging in the crowd. his performance was epic..

Please don't get upset with me, but the closest direct answer to my post was from mushroom, and he said, "Yes you can do all of that." I've asked some pretty specific questions and would be grateful if they got tackled to some extent. As far as the direction this thread is going, here: A guy wanted to lend some help and in doing so, provided very opinionated views on certain things. Was he brash and rude? YES. Is he helping at least one person with this post? YES.

A big reason these boards exist is to help people/spread the knowledge. Another reason is to discuss opinions. However, because I'm the one who needs help, I come first! :P just playin...but seriously, I'd appreciate any and all help in response to my previous post.

Thanks all.

You mean the vid didn't answer all your questions? :( I would suggest you reread your post, and figure out what it is that your trying to ask.

example: And this works because when you put movement in the sound (originally in massive via lfos, envelopes, etc), there are different pitches of the sound and you play off them by triggering different starting points that play the pitches of the sound...??

example 2: I also know how to chop audio, but I'm not clear on the purpose of doing that.

You know what makes a live performance better than some dude improvising on an mpc? Pyrotechnics and strippers.

That video made dubstep look as lazy and thoughtless as possible. Good direction for you to head into.

If you're telling me to figure out what I'm trying to ask b/c you don't understand then let me rephrase: I'm wondering if 1. you load samples into one hits which are different notes of a sound made in a synth..such as a 'D' note, and an 'F' note, etc...or 2. are you loading different starting points of a 4 bar sustained 'D' note, or can you do both...and can you mix parts 1 and 2 as long as you stay in key?

I don't know how to be more clear than that...

there aren't rules. Do yourself a favor and read one of the bountiful and informative threads on resampling and basslines.
you can resample particular notes, as well as bars of sustained modulated notes (i.e. envelopes and LFOs) then experiment with the sample-start parameter on your sample, transposition, pitchbends, sequencing, amp envelopes, etc. This guy just wanted hits on his mediocre-at-best MPC video.
