Not really. You show someone some wicked groovy or soulful House track and they're like 'nah its not really that good' lol. Or they go 'its not really my style' then proceed to show me some absolutely shite jump up track that you'd have to be pilled up like billy wizz to enjoy.

I don't think you can obsess too much over drums really. Take that blawan track hutyluty posted for example. It's really stripped down, yet it's a tune because of the excellent drums.

Of course you can. If one part of a track gets obsessed over, the rest of it gets left. You have to be even with it, so perhaps obsess over everything, but only to a degree. Once you start obsessing over something, you'll never get it to a point where you're happy with it. I understand budding producers tend to obsess over things they find difficult, whether its drums or whatever, but you just have to advance your skills and get over that, otherwise you're forever stuck in a rut. We all go through that stage when we're starting out, but thats what progression is all about isn't it? I'll see if I can check that track to see if its truly as good as you claim, but I tend not to listen to very minimal music, it bores me. There's a select few tech/ deep house tracks that are fairly simple, pretty much really groovy drums/ percussion and a great bassline, but they still have some synths and great vocals that keep that interest there, without the latter, they would be very boring imo.

It raises the question, if drums are so important and worth obsessing over, just how playable/ listenable is your/ the track, with no drums? Try it. If you can listen to about half of the track with no drums, then its at a great level and the addition of drums will only elevate that level.

There is LOTS of music with no drums in that I could listen to. I couldn't think of many--if any-- tunes, with just drums, that I could listen to for more than around 30 seconds or so...

You could listen to a whole track with the same jungle drums looped over and over?! All I can say is, you're VERY easily amused, if not a little sad... Oh how I'd like to be so easily amused by music just for a day, it would be like enjoying pop music!

I think we're simply using different definitions of "obsessing" here... I'm just saying you can't neglect the drums as it will make a track sound like crap. not saying you shouldn't put out stuff because you can't get the drums "right".

Not at all talking about different stuff, but there is a large difference between going in one direction and 'neglecting' a part of the track, and going the complete polar opposite and obsessing over it.

If you are saying 'you can't obsess too much over drums' then, imo, you must be massively neglecting other parts of the tracks.

By the way, for all the things you are saying about obsessing over drums, the producer clearly DID NOT obsess over the drums in that track lol. They are the best drums, simple and groovy, but they are not intricate or complicated nor have they been been obsessed over; if it wasn't for the swung percussion, it would just be a very average kick-snare-hi hat pattern. The rawness suits the track, but they are simple and definitely not drums that you could describe as 'something that you obsessed over' while taking yourself completely seriously. Nice track though

If drum lines grow and change and evolve, then they keep me interested, which is why I can listen to Buddy Rich, Pangaea, and loads and loads of old jungle.

Intricate drum patterns and minimal basslines excite me.

You're splitting hairs now. Fair enough you meant "obsess" as in its literal meaning, I did not. You're right, those drums in that Blawan track are not intricate or complicated, and I never said they were, nor did I say that you needed intricate or complicated drums for a track to sound good. However they are very well done, and as you say yourself they suit the track perfectly. They make the track almost. I get the feeling that Blawan focuses a great deal on his drums when producing.

I remember when we didn't have the whole dubstep/brostep divide, back in 2009 or so, a well-made drum track was what separated tunes from generic crap. You could almost hear who came from a garage backgrund and who didn't.

I agree, roots play a part in everything! Synkro is one person that must have been doing something in the 90's, Im not sure about his roots, but his drums are real good, he must of been doing 2Step or something before the whole dubstep and later, future garage thing came about. A well made drum track won't make a tune, but if a tune has boring drums, you just think 'wtf?'. Its one reason im not a fan of a lot of new Todd Edwards tracks, the drums are too straight and nothing like the ones in his old tracks like Shut The Door, End This Hate, Main Vibe, As I am e.g. really bumpy and groovy!

i gotta say, i think that how important the drums are is entirely based on the artist's/song's style...

i personally find the drums in this song simple, but i think they also kick fucking ass, and really are the heart of the song.
