Club teams aren't part of the world cup and are played collectively by members of all countries, the majority not being from your country

(Going back to the thread's original intention) I think that most of the bemusement you caused among the football's defenders might be because you posted a video that seemingly wasn't very funny - mainly, perhaps, because for the last 20 years the topic of diving (and all the humour involved) has been rinsed to death - in the UK and worldwide. Nowhere has this aspect of football been more closely looked at, belittled and derided than here.

Just to add, simulation in football has been outlawed for years and years - this isn't some kind of new rule...

it was more about the ESPN series of commercials and their take on it... I guess your espn doesn't get those commercials with your athletes and your commentators.

it may have been outlawed but every 4 years when north american acts like it cares about soccer for a few months it's always the hot topic because it's blatantly still rampant in the game. Get just enough hype to start getting interested then there's some cheesey foul and we're reminded why we love our football... if you do a cheap foul like that you're gonna get knocked out the next play guaranteed

anywho not talking about superior or inferior just different strokes different folks

if you have grown up going to the football every saturday with your dad, looking forward to it all week, youd understand/have a very different outlook.

no one will insult football players more than people who watch football. its what we do. whether its for diving, being a rapist, being a rough tnuc, being a pussy, being foreign, being english, even being too good, it doesnt matter, we rarely put the athletes up on pedestals. Its the club I love, not the players. americans seem to think theyre making some incredibly original point when they go on about the follies of football.

jeeez, when i go to the football the goalie get rinsed! literally so bad, im amazed most goalies carry on playing the amount of shit they get from the fans behind them.

But yeah, like someone else said, it's tribal. You can be an intelligent, well educated professional during the week, but come match day will be ranting and raving like sort of testosterone fueled caveman. American sports seem to more of an 'event' then a competition of identity/regionalism, however as petty and pathetic as that essentially is. That's why I don't understand how anyone can support a team halfway across the country over here.

Some football games are like that as well.

It's slightly different, but it's rather clear which team has the advantage of, let's say, the first half within 10 minutes. So every time the 'winning' team is in the attack, the suspense is building with every failed attack, culminating into the first succesful goal when the crowd goes nuts.

I'm bored to death by all sports and I actually agree with the video you posted and the pacing of most games is boring. Not because there aren't enough points being scored but because most of the times, there's really little attack or defense going on. It's just kicking the ball around.

I personally am glad you lot don't like football on a large scale. If you did you'd become the best at it. And that would sadden me even more that we are a bit shit.

Although...FIFA ranked 4th in the world....fuck knows how that happened ha.

One of the finest things I've witnessed is three toff type, middle class fellas on the terrace adding the word tnuc to everything they shouted out. Not ironically. It was amazing to see these guys making the most of being able to be this offensive without their wives slapping them.

Diving isn't allowed in football though, it is punishable and its looked down on- especially in the UK. If you want to take the piss out of countries for doing it then its much more widespread in Latin america and continental europe.

And if you want to compare a UK sport with american football then it'd be rugby, which has very little faking (excluding fake blood capsules!) .

My main gripe with american football is there is no flow to it at all it stops every 5 seconds, I don't understand how watching 3 hours of adverts is enjoyable! (Going by the superbowl) It bores me to tears

Trying to convince people who have already decided not to like the sport to like it is futile.

I like football, I like watching my team (not so much England), I love playing football, and as somebody said earlier in about the lack of goals, there's nothing quite like seeing a last minute winner. An American might've considered the Arsenal - Birmingham Carling Cup Final boring, but I don't think I've ever been as happy as a sports fan as I was than when I saw Obafemi Martins score in the 83rd minute.

Understand that other people get the same feeling from different sports, but I'm not gonna knock a dude/whole culture because they love it when Nadal pulls off some sick serve.

thats one of the great things about football though, it unites people outside of class divides; when else do you see toff stnuc and council estate oiks unite like they do for football?
and as the country with the biggest club teams in the world, as a boy growing up in england its basically impossible to avoid football, and to have some sort of emotional connection with it

all i can say is i havent been able to support a team properly since gareth southgate broke my heart in 1996. i sobbed and sobbed and swore of taking football seriously for years
