same conversation happened in dnb when pendulum attracted a whole load of floaters into dnb... i used to be of the opinion that it was in some way 'diluting' the scene cos everyone was playing cheesy tunes. But i think the dnb night i run wouldn't be half as popular if it weren't for pendulum.
Same goes for all music imo. The kids get into it cos it's the new cool thing (e.g. garage/2-step in the late 90s), but as time goes on they develop their own opinions and new music is born (eg. dubstep).
nu-rave isn't a genre tho that's the problem. it's a fabricated genre consisting of the teenage angsty rock/indie genre dressed up in silly clothes and given a synth.... woo they've got a SYNTH! omg it's so groundbreaking
