renoise is a great bit of software!
there's also psycle tracker (http://psycle.pastnotecut.org
it's more like buzz tracker but with impulse/fasttracker style tracking interface. it also supports vst and is free :)

I was having a play about with renoise the other day, and am still deeply confused by it! I'm sure its learnable though.

However, before i go down that path, I need to know if its worth it. My main problem is that I can't play keyboard etc., and so have never used midi controllers to input notes ( i just draw them in). Drawing in notes looks like it could be a bit of a mission in Renoise. Is this the case?
Any thoughts?

Cheers!

No, you can still put in notes without using a MIDI controller, but instead of dragging them you just like 'type' 'em in. That's the main principle of tracking.

Yup.

The same principle applies, it's all ear; and reconciling those funny numbers and letters on the screen with what your ear hears. You'll figure it out, A, you're a clever guy. :) (And if you don't, just shoot James or myself an email and we'll try to help...)

1.9b is great, looking forward to the full release.

one of the many perks of renoise :) also, gravious, it sounds like renoise would actually be the perfect thing for you. I've found that i havent even been using my midi keyboard since i bought it. If i do play something in renoise, i just use the computer keyboard, as it's so intuitive, and my fingers are already there anyway.

essentially:

sequencer = windows/ OS X

renoise = unix command line interface

which is more powerful, once you learn it? :D

Renoise is currently on 1.9RC1, so all you non-registered dudes can download the latest version demo now and revel in the heavy heavy heavy quality of it all.

Well I loaded it up and couldn't figure how the fuck I build a drum pattern and couldn't be arsed with the manual. I always tough trackers were for 8bit gaming geek muso's.

I think I'll stick with my piano roll tbh.

cool! thanks for your contribution to this thread! :D if you ever decide that you can be arsed with the manual, you'll find it to be much more useful than you thought...

Nah!!

If anyone is stuck with renoise I have got a few hours spare now. PM me with your MSN details and I will talk you through it.

My bird just emailed me and is going to be late, so i am just sitting on my arse doing nothing.

Any takers?

you don't need a midi keyboard at all. i never in my life posessed a midi keyboard. thats the excellent thing about renoise (and trackers in general) that you can jam around using your computer keyboard and then simply type the notes into the tracks. if you done this for a while, you memorize blindly which tone is on which computer key.

if i can focus long enough to read/watch the tutorials.. oh yeah :] i listened to the demo songs that came with it, and i gotta say, this prog seems more flexible than anything i've ever used. i have absolutely no experience with trackers but if everyone here seems to like it so much, i might as well give it a spin

plus i need to replace logic 5.5 with something stable, lol

renoise is more stable than a cirque de soleil tight-rope unicycle rider.

(really fucking stable.)

Renoise is nice! I like it a lot, use it for mashing up samples and stuff mainly but its a 9/10 from me, 10/10 if it wasn't all oldschool tracker-ish
