I play at a night dubstep night called stink like sock and one of the co runners/residents Swiss dropped it as his last one. But liiterally held it before the horn part. Destroyed the place as you say, was a big moment and even all the proper dubstep heads loved it.

I've still got my original copy somewhere, I think its in my Mum's loft! got about a shit ton of DnB vinyl from that era to about 2007-8ish. Don't really know what to do with it, but I definitely don't want to sell it.

Same here pretty much. Only got pretty decent the last year or so though. Everything changed for me when I finally understood that it's totally legit to play house and dubstep alongside old pop/r&b gems.

Adopting a more hip hop approach but still riding long, smooth blends was a revelation.

Does anyone ever mix 80's pop ie Elton John, with their dubstep?

lol, got Djay about 2 years ago, being a student it was just the easiest option to drive my passion, never actually said, yo i'm a dj though, because it is ridiculous.
about a month ago i got a pair of CDJ200's, decent start really, in that month alone i've already got to the stage where i don't need to count.. (mind you, i legitimately listen to music almost every hour of the day, minus sleep and work, and it's been that way for almost 10 years..) being a drummer and musician in general, i guess that really helps, same with beat matching. (havn't opened DJay since, lol.)

currently trying to get my record player situation sorted out, both parent's have one, but one is broken, the drive-belt? seems to be damaged, or something in that area, havn't tried my dads record player, but by the looks of it, the plate is really chunky and heavy, i can't imagine it working to greatly, either way i need to replace the needle.

once i sort that out i'll be connecting it up to the mixer so i can run a 3 deck sort of thing.

improvement is always a possibility, and i'm just so passionate about mixing, and music, like, it is just so enjoyable to put cd's (and soon to be vinyl, aswell) mix what you want, make things work and experiment etc, i'm so glad i finally decided to bite the bullet and get something physical.

@reverb funny you should mention that, my dad has a fairly extensive range of 80's stuff like elton john, joe cocker etc, i myself am even thinking of picking up some Sam & Dave records, to experiment hahahaha

About a year and a half. Didn't really bother with learning to count beats...just go with the flow. Starting to get an ear for beats an that now...nice to beatmatch a song just purely by ear.

you are counting beats and phrases. Everything works in x4 multiples.

the first noise you hear on a record starts the bars, and you start counting 1234, 2234, 3234, 4234 (the first number meaning what bar you are on)...

by the time the 8th bar has finished, you will be "feeling" like you are ready to drop the mix, so count 8234 then drop the new tune.... though you shouldn't really, you need to wait till the end of the second 8 bar phrase in a 16 bar phrase before dropping, to ensure tracks are properly in phrase.

When you are waiting for another 16 bar/ or 32 bar phrase to come around you can be dropping the new record in your headphones everytime 4 bars comes around to get the pitch correct while you wait

its amazing how many people will beatmatch a tune but drop it completely out of phrase

its the same thing... just being aware of the basic music theory behind beats in a bar doesn't mean people physically are counting in their head. understanding bar structure simply explains the things people are doing "by ear" or "off by heart"

First 12" i bought was Joey Beltam Energy Flash, i purchased my first decks in around 1992, can't remember the name but the pitch was the smallest of knobs with nothing more then a 2% increase/decrease in tempo, had a Realistic mixer with no crossfader (anyone remember them?) purchased from Tandy, the memories are flooding back now...

I couldn't mix for shit for a good few years but i stuck with it and learned a lot from a good friend who is a well respected Dj on the Jungle/DnB circuit. I'm now on my 4 set of Technics, bought an sold a pair of CDJ 1000mk3 last year as i didn't enjoy mixing with cds as it took all the fun out of it for me...

yeah i agree. i know how bars work and everything but in my head i can work out where it's gonna need to be and whatever. all these numbers just seems to confuse matters

I think I have no concept of song structure but just know when I start mixing tunes.

Kind of like an instinct thing.

It seems to be the hardest thing for a beginner to understand. A kid I used to know did this alllll the time, on-stage, in front of people..and it was probably the screechiest derbstep around. Imagine that shit. He just couldn't understand the concept of a "phrase". Seems very instinctual and obvious if you're already really into music.
