Both, for quite some time, well if you count Record ;-)

Legitimately excited about reason. Seems like they're really stepping up their game. Thought they were completely down and out. They are still fighting.

I'm very exited about this. I always loved the patching/modularity of it and the combinator is the best device within Reason imo. Alot of people complain that reason was only a few fx, but if you dig deeper into the routing and the combinator then almost everything is possible. With Rack Extensions even more cool stuff will be possible. As all these new extensions can also have CV/Gate?Audio I/O on the back of the rack, which is very cool. Urs mentioned on KVR that he and other developers are very exited about this too and he doesn't think that this is just another 'format'. I hope there will be also new extensions not just ports of existing plugins.

The thing I'm not really sure about is the 'online prop store' on which these extensions will be sold, mainly due to crossgrading or buying a plugin which normally comes in all formats. It's not good if people will have to pay twice just to get it for Reason too. Urs said he cannot simply give away the ported plugs to those who already have it in VST format for free, but he's trying to work something out. This store also has some cool things imo, automatic registration to your account and all extensions can be demo'ed for 30 days. It also seems to take care of piracy pretty well, which is a good thing for the developers.

But we'll have to see how this plays out. Can't wait for the update in Q2.

Yeah, (talking out my ass) but it seems like your machine has to be connected to the internet, and that your software is going to be talking to the mothership on a regular basis. I'm just not down with that. My machine is my domain, I don't want it having conversations on the sly when I'm not looking.

And it is disheartening that you will have to buy the same plug twice, once for vst, and once for reason. They talk big, but that is a pretty big gotcha, imo. This is still good news for those remaining reason users out there...

Yeah I get what you are saying, I'm neither down with that. I hope there will be also another way of registering the extensions. I do still have the dongle which came with Record. But now it holds my R6 license so my machine doesn't have to talk to the mothership. Perhaps it will also work for the extensions, not sure. I know alot of people dislike dongles, but I don't mind it that much, as it came free with the software and I have a spare USB slot.

This could be completely untrue, but I swear I read somewhere recently that their sales have been immense in the past two years or so, apparently the best two years saleswise the company's ever had.

No idea where I read that though, but I'd be interested in finding out. Absolutely love Reason, but I still haven't tried Reason 5

Looks good to me.

Several things are good.

1> Propellerheads are listening to their customers and adding things that people want at last.
2> It's feasible that any device deemed 'missing' from Reason can now be added by anyone willing to program the thing.
3> It will be rock solid and cross platform.
4> It seems they're speeding up their release cycle which personally I think is good.

Question is, will R6 stand up to Bitwig Studio when that's released?

Like a good eq, comp, and limiter... :O

And Cloak, don't know about their sales, I saw their press conference, and I think 6 had the highest upgrade rate, like 250% over previous releases, maybe because Record was integrated (finally)? I think they are going after the consumer market, which is always going to be bigger. Think they were fading in relevancy in terms of actual production. I know that I sound like a huge dick for stating things like that, but if the dick fits...

I don't know why people are so hyped about this, its not proven itself at all yet. Might be great, might be crap.

Ah maybe that's the stat I'd heard then. I would think that the high upgrade rate would be 1) full integration of audio (if you didn't own record, this is probably the biggest Reason update ever), and 2) the upgrade paths for people with Reason 5, Record, and both were REALLY good for the first month (anybody with Reason 5 and Record could pay as little as $1 for the upgrade!).

Not a dick for saying that at all, I think they were never in the same league as other DAWs in terms of both userbase and reputation (i.e. professional respect), no matter how good their software was (I always thought it was great, personally, and it's what I produced on for many years).

However I DO want to hear you finish "If the dick fits..." as I have no idea how that expression should be ended :6:

They're hyped because it's evolving on a great concept (Ableton Live), redoing it from the ground up, adding features people have wanted for years, and is made by software developers with great reputations (some of the people that made the original Live, with the guy who made Shortcircuit and Surge working on instruments).

Version 1 is going to be a disappointment since hype is way too high and some of the best features won't come until Version 2, but there's definitely justification in the hype.
