It's good but not great. I enjoyed the EP's more to be honest. 'Strawberry' is awesome and Jam City at his best. I wished for more tracks in that style.

Kinda with you on that. The 4x4 tracks that hadn't already been played in mixes and what not don't seem that special. Still gonna pick this up and most likely play the chit out of it

It's a pretty cool album, quite cohesive as one piece of music. It most certainly hasn't grabbed me like I thought it would have, but I'm sure I'll grow to like it more over time, we'll see

I really like it so far, can see it becoming an all time favourite.
As some have said it's not very immediate but I just love how the "place" and feel of the record is so isolated but so definite.
I think you can hear that the album is very considered and carefully constructed; the whole thing feels incredibly post-modern without seeming too worthy and still feels sincere, which isn't an easy feat.
Very exciting music.
sorry if this reads like a pitchfork review I'm excited

Yeah, listening to this one a few more times on a summer holiday, it has grown on me a bit more already.
It's a well crafted album for sure: it's cohesive, it does have a flow to it. It's alienating and very familiar at the same time. It's cold-like efficient at one moment but can feel very warm the next.
But It simply hasn't grabbed hold of me like some of the EP tracks have. "2 Hot" is still by far my favourite one of his tunes. It truly is an experience. The same goes for "Barely A Track" (especially the ending). Not to mention some of the more ambient dubplates of him that have appeared on a few of the mixes he's done since his debut EP. I'm missing a few of those moments on here.
Again, It's a good album. But if I were to compile a list right now, it's unfortunately in the sub top (Actress, Death Grips, Shackleton, Voices from the Lake...). And there's nothing wrong with that. I still hope that we'll get to see some more of his dubplates on wax (though they're certainly very different from 50% of this album, so that is very much not a given).

I'm slowly coming around to this LP, it's reminding me of what Guido's Anidea LP did for me. I didn't instantly like the album but with different listens theres little sounds and effects that I really like hearing and its building up nicely.
Weird description, basically, it's growing on me

I now perfectly understand why Final Joust wasn't on there.
Would still make a great white label though

first impressions were that it had a slightly pretentious vibe to it, just steeped in too much theory and concept for its own good.
my personal preference if for music made with the heart, not the head, previous Jam City tunes def had that vibe to them

Funny, I had the exact opposite reaction; I really admired the album for having that post-modern vibe without feeling too self-important/pretentious - I couldn't get into the James Ferraro album last year for this exact reason.
I don't think making music that is the sum of influences and ideas you love is pretentious.
And saying that art that comes from the 'heart' and not the "head" doesn't have a concept is just incorrect.
Although, I have a major soft spot for 80's art pop....

I hear what you're saying and it's def got some truth, I'm not one to air my opinions on here but wanted to see what people thought as Night Slugs have been a huuuuuuge influence for me over the last couple years.
I just think that music that is too aware of itself becomes more an exorcise in theory and less about the music itself. I know aesthetic and concept is important, but the Chicago Dance Mania/trax guys they're referencing probably put much less thought into the creation of their sound, more a necessary expression than a calculated creation. I've also got a bit of a complex about 80's synth pop cos my own father was in one of those bands and I had enough of it as a kid.
I will blaze one off and give it another go still......

Have to say this has really grown on me the past week. I'm loving it now. But it's sooooo short. Could have done with a few more bits.

jam city's best material is still his early stuff from 2009-ish
trax like "island", "clocktower", "in the park" ...
they all sounded like rough drafts, but that was part of the charm
"her" goes hard though. definitely the highlight of the album
