tbf mate i grew up in an area sounds similar to yours

massively white, sprawling council estate, racism at schools etc. etc.

its shit, no other way to describe it, grow up feeling like an outsider, carried it through to my adult life... not cool, all sorts of unforeseen shitty character developments stem from it for me personally

places in london are pretty mixed up, i've only ever got problems for being a woman really, if you're an asian man i would worry about the police lulz

might be more of an outside london thing - a few white neighbourhoods in leicester that were pretty no-go BNP type places for me

manchester's a very white city anyway, but especially where i grew up, just seems like such a bizarre choice of place for my parents to move to when they were young but they wanted to get out of the main city and couldn't afford to buy round where they lived so it makes sense in a way

still though, who the fuck moves INTO Wythenshawe?! bizarre lol

My road is actually quite nice tbf and i'm very grateful i live here, but If i venture out 3 minutes each direction i'm in the territory of a notorious brum family of racists and just generally deprived edl shitholes. It's a daily thing to get stuff yelled at me or intimidated when walking from the bus or train stops. I managed to avoid going to secondary school here but was sent to school in a posh area just outside of birmingham where i didn't encounter ignorant chav-types, i met old money racists. The kind who would ask to your face "why are you talking to me paki? My dad said this and this and this i'm not supposed to talk to you" and being the only brown kid for about 5 years didn't really give me many social options. Idon't speak with a brummie-asian accent so other asians just call me a coconut etc. it's pretty funny when i think about it but yeah, i just want to live somewhere people didn't give a shit about any of this. Which is why i asked cus i didn't think random street crime in london had race boundaries like it does in birmingham. I just thought the Capital would have somewhere comfortable for someone like me.

I like my area in North London. It's quite mixed, although there is a strong Turkish (and a bit smaller Indian and West Indian, further up the road) community. It's a crazy place, but it feels safe at the same time. Example - during the last year's riots my street was pretty much guarded by Turkish, erm, security, and not one shop or house was touched. The shops along the road seem to follow a 'kebab' - 'barber' - 'patisserie' pattern, with a casual Polish shop, offie, pub and 'hot nuts' thrown in between. Finsbury Park is 5 minute walk away from my house and I love that park. I've been living here for over 3 years now, and I'm pretty content.

Tbf we were quite lucky with the place, as the size is rather good and the price is decent. In fact the landlord forgot to raise our rent since we moved in 3.5 years ago. Duh.
