Naming huuuuge ass classic rawk or chart topping '90s albums is such a cop out.
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Venetian Snares - Rossz csillag alatt született

Not necessarily 'obscure'. Like none of the records I posted are obscure. But c'mon mayne. These "time tested classics" are overrated by definition.

No, everything you posted is pretty obscure. 75% of the general public probably dont know who you mentioned.

Word, but we aren't the general public.

And seeing as they're overrated by definition it's pretty redundant is what I'm sayin'.

I love the Mayhem and Vsnares albums, but yeah, they're overrated. And Madvillainy is definitely overrated. Anything from DOOM in general imo...
everything by Radiohead is also terribly overrated. Never got what's the big deal about them.
Minor Threat - Out of Step. The album is pretty much shit, like most classic "true" old school hardcore.
Joy Division's albums. I like them alot, but c'mon...
Music Has The Right To Children
anything by J Dilla
AC/DC - Back in Black. Music for rednecks imo.
and the list could go on...

Actually, yeah word. American "hardcore classics", the ones that indie rockers namedrop as classics and follow up with "HARDCORE DIED IN 86". Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Minutemen (or SST in general). There's so much good hardcore outside of that and some of the most "innovative" hardcore records came out AFTER 86. Indie rockers are just scared of blastbeats or anything outside of the American-accepted rock tradition.
And yeah like Rossz is a good album, but also kinda cheesy and people hype it up with 'BREAKBEATS WITH CLASSICAL SAMPLES'.. pretty much what hip-hop producers have been doing since the early '90s. And shit, not even the first breakcore artist to do it (and it's been done a lot more subtley too)

I agree. I just don't "get" burial, i thought I did once but then I listened again and it had gone.
I get it and will always love those 2 albums but he's not some god of garage like some people make out and i think there's others have done it better
I think people try and convince themselves that his music is better than it is, mostly because some over-the-top fans and critics treat it as if it's the greatest thing in the history of sound and goes way beyond like, "good tunes", as if burial himself literally appears in your bed while you listen to tug you off and give you free drugs. Maybe i just dont get music tbf, because nothing has ever made me feel the way people do when they talk about burial on the internet. Gets to some serious

territory on occasion.

Burial peaked with Untrue. The first record had some moments and there were some good remixes/singles (and Moth is fucking genius). But I'm still all about Untrue.
Untrue is just great start to finish and pretty unique overal. But word the Burial worship IS fucking crazy.

You're not. I wouldn't say I hate them but I know people who do.I don't really like the music I've heared except for a couple of tunes, and I like those because of context i.e. they were used in a film I love, like Come Together.
I agree with Genevieve on that Snares album. And it's not that obscure, it has been used on television, had loads of magazine reviews etc. It's not pop obviously, but it's not really what I'd call obscure. It's definitely overrated though, especially as people still think he composed that music... but it was just classical samples.

this
Black Flag is the only band I'd ever namedrop out of that whole bunch. Maybe Bad Brains... and that pretty much sums up all the "classic" hardcore I like.

It's sort of a shame that it overshadows everything else he's done, and there's these really dodgey cuts and transitions between the samples he used that really bothers me when i listen. Quite gimmicky.

Ima bit of a hypocrite to be fair, i complain about the way people wank over burial then do the exact same thing when i talk about Geogaddi or Timeless

I kind of hate that people make it out to be his 'most complex and mature work' even though it's just his most accessible. The beats aren't that complicated and the sampling is really in your face. It's waay too aware of the fact that it's using sampled CLASSICAL MUSIC. If I want to hear breakcore with strings and violins, I'll listen to Abelcain. Compare Rossz to Doll Doll Doll and you really only hear a very stripped down record that's digestable to your average Boards of Canada - Aphex Twin spectrum fan.
Best tune on it is the one that samples Billie Holliday though. That's one of his best tunes.

I thought everyone thought that Snares album was shit, tbh, but then I only ever really talk about Snares with ravers. If it's considered great then it's definitely overrated! Was all a bit Jive Bunny goes Classical for my liking.
Chocolate Wheelchair is still amazing.

Old school hip-hop in general. Pre-1990s. Beat wise but ESPECIALLY lyrically. KRS-One (like, he'll have a good verse when he's surrounded by great MCs, but generally his lyrics are sample and whack as hell. That Nelly diss is shameful), Rakim, Ice Cube, etc, may have been the shit for their time but what Ras Kass, Pharoahe Monch, Tash, Redman or even someone like Eminem is doing (and I ain't even a fan of him) is a lot more lyrically competent and interesting.
It's 2012, I mean, of course heads are gonna be doing something more interesting than what someone in the '80s was doing.
