I've got an ESX that I'm not planning on parting with. Can't do polyrhythms and you can only do wonky stuff with creative sample cutting...but...I love grooving on that thing and you can get some funky stuff going on it. Also, a little bit of tube love on the drums always sounds great : ) Also you can do some basic wave table synthesis with it.

Also can do some OK loop chopping etc. You can automate FX or tweak them live to do some glitchy stuff.

I no longer try to do whole tunes on it unless I'm just up for the challenge, but it finds it's place in many of my tunes.

Way more immediate and satisfying than mousing.

I know I love it, it's only got one oscillator but it's got so many possibilties sonically especially with the cv outputs. I got so lucky on purchasing it too, ebay fucked up and didnt automatically outbid someone (my high bid was £400). Was gutted and then next morning one came up for £250 buy it now, so pleased! Even got some custom side panels and the optional glide for it.

Just for general info the dark energy 2 is coming out this year apparently too which will have a few different features. I may get the newer one as the differences could make it one powerful set up. it's got a new filter type and I think the osc is based on a square instead of triangle, not an upgrade though just a chip that's scarce. Will retail same price as original (£380). Am intrigued to see what it's like.

If anyone's interested I could put together a sample pack of the dark energy once I've had a play with it.

Came through the post earlier and been jamming with it this eve. Am very impressed with it, it's got so much sonic capability and sounds great. Came out with some crazy noises and some delicate ones, it really has a huge range of possibilities. With all the semi modular business too there's going to be a lot of experimenting going down. Will be sticking side panels and glide function on it tomorrow

Am considering adding the dark energy 2 alongside this one depending on what it's like compared to the original, would be such a powerful set up.

Outboard sequencing is doooope. Using Tenori for sequencing. Not the best, but you know, it is cool.

I returned my Gaia because it sounded weird. Right now I'm looking at other synths around the $500 price point, Ultranova, XW-P1, Minibrute or maybe something a bit older, like a Alpha Juno or a K-Station. They all look interesting.

Yeah, I don't think the "3 synths layered on top of each other" system works well at all sonically (with the exception of pads, which the gaia is actually quite good at). With basses and leads, when you detune the oscillators, it just sounds messy and awkward instead of fat, like it would on a proper synth. The thing can't make a reese at all. Add to that a bad filter and weird sounding oscillators, and yeah. It's a shame it sounds so weird, because the interface is really nice and it's lots of fun to just mess around with.

Anyway, is there any reason to not buy one of these? $200 less than retail, but it's open box. It's not going to explode when I use it or something right?

I forget is the Gaia VA, or actually analog? Had the Roland rep hyping it up to me back when I was at Guitar Center, but I quit before they got them in stock and I haven't had the need to stop by the shop in ages to see if they have one on the floor.

Glotti, thought you had a different post there... Something about an ultranova, the day I was trying these synths out, the ultranova sounded pretty amazing. But honestly I don't have much experience w it at all. Menus and all that shit. If you're in a hybrid setup, I vote no synths with menus. Vsts can sound awesome, highly programmable, perfect. Only reasons to work synths out of box is sound quality on like true analog, or interface...
