Does anybody have anything to say about getting into academia or plugin development?
academia is entrepreneurial in nature, and no less competitive than music, business, etc. you need to publish, publish, publish your research and maintain a consistent public profile... and teach. it's a hustle just like anything el

I think this is a big point that people need to remember, being successful in anything will require the same crazy work ethic and will involve roughly the same risks. So if you're planning on busting ass 9-5 til death for a career your heart's not even even in to, you'd be foolish not to spend that same energy and drive on something you're passionate about. There's no such thing as a safe or stable career now. I feel that 4 years and ~50,000 spent on getting a degree that doesn't ensure any success professionally is a far bigger risk than busting ass for those same four years and building my own career.
