good thread.

different kinds of beans and peas are cheap and nutritious. chick peas, lentils for the protein. Hemp/seeds are very very nutritious too. I find Soy has been more filling than cows milk too. Worth learning any recipes for rice/noodle/pasta based meals from scratch and making in bulk. end up spending more to begin with, but what you get will last a while. big tub, stick some in the fridge/freezer.

porridge and muesli are cheap and leave you full if you eat enough.

freind posted this earlier too.

A MASSIVE bag of lentils is like £3 from most of the ethnic
stores and will be relatively cheap for the amount of meals
you can make out of it. (I'd recommend the yellow ones
personally). Just remember to soak them in water first before
cooking otherwise you run the risk of breaking your teeth when
you go to eat them.
Chick peas / tinned tomatoes / kidney beans can all be bought
relatively cheaply from like Lidl or Asda own brand.

Also, as a uni student, you're bound to have the odd day off.
Go window shopping - certain shops will have items cheaper
than others. I know the majority of veg was cheaper at the
ethnic stores - but the offers on items like Potatoes and
Onions couldn't be beaten at the supermarket. Shop around -
use one of those days to go and actually GET everything from
every different shop.

Yellow labels are also your friend. Check out the time that the
yellow labels get put out and fucking stand there and wait!
You can get SO much cheap meat that you can get and freeze
as soon as you get home.

I spent 2 months living on 9p super-noodles until the Jan loan
came in - it wasn't easy, but a bottle of Encona chilli sauce
helped it along the way.

I'd also recommend getting a p/t job at a pizza place or something.
Every once in a while, get a friend to call in a fake order 40 mins
before the end of your shift - when it comes back, you can claim it
before you go home coz its a bogus call. Free Pizza.

Yoghurt is probably the best source of protein because it has iodine, B12 AND it`s probiotic to keep you healthy. It`s also very reasonably priced considering a decent portion is around 100g so a carton lasts a long time...
