Wait, are you saying that people actually thought their phones would somehow physically harm them due to the Y2K bug, and smashed them as some sort of preemptive measure?

Nope, they thought that when it clicked over from 1999 to 2000,devices would stop working because they never compensated for the change apparently.
So folks were tossing their phones away thinking they were broken or going to break.
