Re: North Korea conflict imminent?

State of war has been declared by North Korea against the South.
Now it's a case of who blinks first.

Does anybody want to invade China? Surely nobody is that stupid.test recordings wrote:There's plenty of other options; North Korea is essentially a buffer zone to stop US-backed forces invading China, don't forget that. Does a leader of a nuclear-armed (no matter how shoddily) regularly threatening to start a war and hit your and your allies countries with nuclear weapons, then arming those weapons not constitute a need then?test recordings wrote:If you were unnecessarily harassed by US stealth bombers wouldn't you want to at least say something in your own defence? The media seems to be bigging up the Korean's belligerence yet mention nothing about why the US are flying stealth bombers over the area when there's no need?
Come on, I'm not exactly pro-countries sticking their nose in, but this is just pointlessly anti-american.
If one country that borders nuclear maniacs wanted my help in military exercises and gave permission to fly stealth bombers over their own country, then there's no issue IMO, especially with the neighbours that they have.
Without the US trying to own the whole of Korea in the first place it wouldn't have split the country so brutally. The best solution would be reunification, which was heralded by both sides as viable within 50 years not so long ago. It's also fair for the people that live their to exercise their right to self-determination, but they don't necessarily need to be invaded for that to happen!
Ugh, it's going to get ugly.wub wrote:State of war has been declared by North Korea against the South.

China was preventing the possibility of being invaded when they sent troops in to Korea in the '50s after the Americans pushed the North all the way to the border - if they'd have just stopped at the same place that was marked out before the conflict then that wouldn't have been necessary. Probably no-one's going to invade China but then do you think the American fed government is going to hesitate to 'give them democracy' if they thought they were easy prey? The NK buffer zone exists to close off that particular entrance.garethom wrote:Does anybody want to invade China? With regards to your second paragraph, I don't disagree with any of that, and that wasn't my point at all. My point was that if S. Korea want help from the rest of the world to try and keep their nuclear armed, insane neighbours at bay, how can anyone blame them? Nobody's made any physically aggressive moves towards N. Korea. There's nothing they're doing that is worth defending from my point of view.
I'm not suggesting anybody invade anywhere. US OR North Korea. This isn't an anti-US thing, it's an anti NK blowing the shit out of it's neighbours with nuclear weapons, nothing to do with self-determination.
Both China and Russia are having a more sensible tone in advocating action. NK knows it will be obliterated if they try anything serious so this is probably just more talk.Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, responded to the threat by saying that the US should refrain from undertaking "unilateral actions against North Korea" that go beyond those called for by the UN Security Council.
"We can simply see the situation getting out of control, it would spiral down into a vicious circle," he told reporters in Moscow.
China, North Korea's main regional ally and biggest trading partner, meanwhile, called for an easing of tensions in the region, saying that upholding peace and stability in northeast Asia "serves the common interests of all parties", according to a foreign ministry statement.
North Korea declares ''state of war'' against South Korea while United States plays it down
The White House labelled the latest statement from Pyongyang as "unconstructive" and, while taking it "seriously", sought to place the immediate threat level in context.
"North Korea has a long history of bellicose rhetoric and threats and today's announcement follows that familiar pattern," said National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden.
In Seoul, the Unification Ministry insisted the war threat was "not really new". The Defence Ministry vowed to "retaliate thoroughly" to any provocation, but added that no notable troop movement had been observed along the border.
I think you have that backwards. There is no basis to the value of the English pound other than the threat of war. But yes, you personally probably don't have any money for the war, but you will pay if it is asked.lloydy wrote:Heres hoping the UK stays the fuck out of this one.Don't think we have the money to join anyway.
All good points, but the world of the 50's is not the world of today, I don't think anybody in their right mind would think about invading China any more.test recordings wrote:China was preventing the possibility of being invaded when they sent troops in to Korea in the '50s after the Americans pushed the North all the way to the border - if they'd have just stopped at the same place that was marked out before the conflict then that wouldn't have been necessary. Start stocking up people, the end is nigh. The US has announced it is moving an advanced missile defence system to the Pacific island of Guam as North Korea steps up its warlike rhetoric.
A statement from Pyongyang said its military had been given final approval to launch a nuclear strike.
North Korea has threatened to target the US and South Korea in recent weeks.
Its statement came amid warnings from US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel that North Korea is a "real and clear danger" to the US and its allies.
In a further development on Thursday, Pyongyang again blocked South Korean access to the Kaesong joint industrial zone 10km (six miles) inside North Korea. It was the second day the North had blocked the border crossing.
