mate I've been in the country for 10 years and believe it or not, I have actually been outside of Byron Bay in that time, touring a lot, etc. FFS

it IS more chilled out, way safer etc. I've seen about 8 fights in 10 years. And Byron Bay, despite being a "hippy town" that everyone alway stereotypes, has apparently one of the highest alcohol related violence rates in the whole country. So put that in your "hippy" pipes and smoke it

Sounds a lot like the experience of a friend of mine that moved to Melbourne with his family (he's early 40s) a few months ago. He left because he was frustrated with the UK but hasn't found a huge amount of difference apart from the weather (which might be enough to make him stay, I reckon) and slightly less going on.

It's definitely a big step to take on a whim - "home", wherever it is, always holds certain advantages and it takes a while to create home in a new place. Hang tough - sounds like you're making all the right moves!
yerg takes time imo
took me 2 years to settle in london TBH
just have toi get involved - i rekcon it would be toigh with a family as peopel are less willing to engege with what they see as a closed unit
make friends via DSF, raving then u end up getting jobs thru thos epeopel and so on

in some ways living in Sydney is like winning the lottery
trouble is
you have to have won the lottery to afford living here
cos all the jobs are going to ex-pat poms, backpackers & imported Asian tradesmen
and house prices are ridiculously inflated by non-resident Chinese & Russian 1%ers

I'll be moving inland again eventually
(what most Sydneysiders would consider the outback, but it's not)
where I can get cheaper housing & more space

for the same reasons I'd consider NZ's north island if the surf was better,
the Phillipines if I could install plumbing in exchange for not being kidnapped,
South Africa if I could get away with my white robe & bare feet nutter act to be left unmolested
& Galveston Tx if global warming kicks up some more cyclones.

Europe? You gotta be joking.
No amount of culcha would get my gene pool back there, unless, maybe
that beautiful Spanish widow invites me to live with her overlooking Mundacca rivermouth.

and btw
most of yu guys
if you ever got to Byron
would give your left nut to stay there

the problem being, so many already have

easily rectified by living a bit south at Ballina,
a bit north at Kingscliff (altho that's getting a bit too close to Queensland)
or a half hour inland to abandoned communes in gorgeous semi-tropical ease

There are better places in Oz & the Pacific
but I'd prefer for all the blow-ins to congregate in their little paradise
& convince themselves that everyone else is missing out. :P

o yeah
& the bigger it is, the further round the cliffs...with the noahs.
Surfed lots at Boulders too.
You a full-on surfie nowdays or doing the SUP trip?
Saw 60 Japanese touros doing it off Wategoes some years back.
You're missing VonD or MP@OH this weekend by being up there.

NZ is beautiful. I would move there. I body/boogie board and the waves I've seen at the surf beaches I went to were excellent.

In regards to the Philippines, I urge you to go and experience it. I know you will stick out because of your color but if you dress simple (flip flops, wife beater, basketball shorts) and get to know your neighbors, they'll get your back. Just act like everyone, poor. Do shit they do - shower in the public well pump, haggle at the market, stick to the story that you are poor. Don't look/act douchey or flaunt your shit. If you need a place to rent or locals (in Manila), let me know. I have family/friends there. It's better if you share a place with college kids, they'll take you home to their provinces. Outside Manila is where it's at but to get to the other 7,099 islands, you want someone who knows the area.

If you want to experience a classic version of Australia, you need to get out of the capitals. Much more beautiful, I can tell you.

^and off the coasts

^^thanks man, nice of you
when the time comes I will

Slumming isn't in my nature (it's dishonest & exploitative).
I know I'm comparatively privileged, even on a limited income.
Once you've travelled in Asia, everythings relative eh?
I can be fairly personable when I want to be
and don't mind shitting & showering in public.

But
NZ sandbars have nothing on Oz reefbreaks
(I grew up bodyboarding Shark Island, Vooey & Aussie Pipe)

Well at least our national emblem tastes better than most.
You'd need a lot of tomato sauce on lion to make it palatable.
But enough about God's Own, I like the idea ^ of living on a plastic island.
