I like the idea of the BBC but it's pretty much degraded to the level of commercial tv over the last few years. Probably a couple of hours of anything worth watching in an entire week is fairly shite to my mind.
Yes, I agree that it produces some very poor programmes of the kind you have detailed above and needs to make a move back towards the '60s conception of BBC television being more educational and of substance. But I do think it produces more than a 'couple of hours' of good stuff a week.
Anyway, this is off topic so I'll meet you in the carpark behind Asda in Taunton and we can have a fight to see who is right.

1Xtra is all about Bailey on Sunday evening. Used to listen each and every show.
Shame about Flighty - I bet she'll find better alternative.

Blackdown made a good comment, think they do a good job @ the beeb, listen to 1xtra from time to time and as always .... things will probably change !

Sir David Attenborough/ThinKing wrote:"the BBC can never please everyone all of the time. Try and think of it as a pendulum swinging between high-brow, informative content and low-brow, lowest common-denominator entertainment. It can never occupy the happy middle ground for more than a few fleeting moments before one demographic or the other cries that the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction. Thus it swings back the other way and so the problem repeats itself in cycles".
I think that beautifully sums up the problems the BBC faces
Yet surely now in this digital era, the number of channels/stations available should be enough to provide each demographic with what they want? In theory, anyway...
Programme controllers need to take more risks. Can't believe that there's no dubstep on 1Xtra yet to be honest...

That's odd. This forum is actually the second result for "dubstep" on google
.com I wonder why they differ? I always assumed that Page Rank was more or less universal.

Looks like the axing has happened across the board. L Double, Richie Vee (replaced by a house dj, ironically), Flight, Silver Star and even Rodney P & Skitz have vanished from the lineup. Well pissed that it seems to be exactly the DJs that I enjoyed the most in the respective genres on the station (bar L Double).
Have 1x stated any particular reason for this, or is it simply your usual riddance of DJs with the lowest listener count?

No there'll be regional boosting for UK. this forum won't look like it's from the UK (it isn't) whereas the BBC will. SEO experts say Google particularly loves the BBC and the Guardian, when it comes to weighting UK online content.

While we're randomly slating BBC radio, has anyone spotted that Radio 1 are moving "In New DJ's We Trust" into the glamorous thursday night / friday morning 2-4am slot?
It doesn't bother me that much cos I listen to it fairly irregularly, and then normally on listen again, but couldn't they at least rename it "With New DJ's We Grudgingly Put Up Provided They Don't Get In The Way Of Colin Murray Or Zane Lowe" or something.
(The whole INDJWT 4 week rotation thing seems to be a pretty iffy idea tbh - it's a stretch to expect anyone have a long enough attention span to remember a radio show that's on every four weeks, let alone Hard Dance fans...)

i think its too easy to take it for granted as we've all grown up with the BBC. whatever your issue with 1Xtra's branding, it's still far better than commercial radio and better than if it were not to exist at all.
nail on head!!!
you guys are so lucky! US FM and satellite radio, apart from things like npr are 80% crap.
Exactly.
Apart from Radio 1 and 1xtra, I listen to internet radio on iTunes, because it keeps me from having an aneurysm that commercial radio would give me. And even internet radio is at risk over in the States because they've just raised royalty fees that these independent radios have to pay to play decent music. If this keeps up, most of these internet radio programs won't stay in the air. Just check savenetradio.org

I think 1xtra is a load of rubbish.
There views on 'black' music are mad.Theyre sayin theyre not havin dubstep on there because its not from black origon. These statements are nuts.
Dubstep is one of the most multicultural musics there is.Stations like 1xtra are making sure that everything is seperated.
I then hear rasqami on radio1 playin some digital mysticz sayin this is the latest 'black music'.To be honest this got me quite mad because one minute 1xtra are sayin 'no dubstep, its not black music'and as soon as it gets a bit bigger theres some guy labelling it as 'black music'.
I think everyone needs to forget the hole black music thing, its just seperating everyone,i mean you would get shot if you tried to go on there sayin'yup this is white music for the next hour '
Music is music,in this day and age every race makes pretty much every type of music.
Everyone needs to just chill out a bit.
just stumbled on this thread....

i swear half of you lot just dont like 1xtra saying it plays 'black music' cos you feel left out or like its not for you if they say its BLACK MUSIC. you need to get over it IMO. cos no one has a problem saying certain restaurants or cusines are from a certain place or culture, why is it diff for music? im not black but i accept a lot of what i listen to IS black music (if only by virtue of it being made primarily by black artists). granted, with dubstep or D&B its a bit difficult cos a lot of the artists are of different ethnic backgrounds but its still a lot to do with 'black music'...

I'd forgotten I'd even made a thread about this before! I'd probably have bumped this one instead of making a new one if I'd remembered.

Where have they actually said this? If they said this then that's stupid. I would say, if anything, dubstep is more "black music" than drum and bass, because it has more in common with dub for instance. Drum and bass has some "black music" roots, but not that much.

obviously i dont say im going out for 'black food' but i would say 'carribean food' or 'african food'. but what are you gonna do? you cant say 'the best for hip hop, garage, r&b, drum n bass, underground soul, soca!' etc etc. its too much of a mouthful. so 'black music' is just a neat summary of all of that in one.
the reason half the stuff played on 1xtra doesnt get played on radio 1 IS cos its 'black music' and not indie/rock/pop, i dont see the big deal in being aware of this.

HOW ON EARTH WOULD YOU CLASS DUBSTEP AS EVEN
SLIGHTLY ANYTHING TO DO WITH BEING 'BLACK' MUSIC ?!
Jus because of the word 'dub' !? - which means 'instrumental' really - rather than anything related to 'dub'music - yea theres dub influences with the heavy basslines (but theres house influences, rock influences, so many genres influence dubstep - ) - but dubstep is not anything to do with being black or white - people who pioneered this sound are british, south londoners of BOTH black and white race ---- seriously think you are off the mark mate.
and drum and bass is black music too?! ARE YOU HAVING A LAUGH! i can understand jungle - with its use of alot of ragga samples (but still jungle was only seen as a more 'black' music
because of the ragga samples - ragga being music from black origins) etc - if i where to name you some pioneers of drum & bass / jungle there is a compleate mix of BOTH black and white producers/ dj's - again british.
'BLACK' music is dancehall, reggae, bashment etc the roots are from overseas - jamacia etc - back in the day with the outside soundsystems etc
____________________________________________________________
WHY DO WE EVEN NEED TO HAVE TO THINK ABOUT PUTTING MUSIC IN CATOGORIES OF
RACE - TO ME THAT IS JUST AWFUL.
LIKE I SAID IN MY POST EARLIER IN THE THREAD - TALK ABOUT PIGEION HOLING / DIVIDING PEOPLE AND MUSIC -
IT DISGUSTS ME -
MUSIC IS FOR EVEYONE TO APPRICIATE - PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS RESPECT THE ORIGINS OF GENRES,
BUT WHY BLATENTLY CLASSIFY / ADVERTISE SOMETHING AS BLACK OR WHITE MUSIC?! ITS ABSOLOUTLY CRAZY.
!?
soz about caps but this really fucks me off big time
