Sound design in Inception is amazing though.

nah Inception is sick imo, obviously some faults but overall I really liked itwolf89 wrote:Inception is arse too. It's what people who only watch hollywood pop corn movies think is deep
I know people like to hate on Nolan but I think Inception is great for what it is. Yeah the fanboys are annoying as hell but all the high rated IMDB films suffer from that. It's a better made film than something like Forrest Gump which is an example of mediocrity held up as a masterpiece.wolf89 wrote:Inception is arse too. Not at all. There's so many cultural reference points that made it out of Forrest Gump and into society. Inception will always stand as the example of a film that could have been amazing, but decided to have a lot of very non- dramatic scenes where the people in them either have trouble explaining what is going on, or just bad writing disguised by a condescending tone in a what seems like a guy or gal reading out an ikea manual. + some bits where even less accesible than that... for example that slow down thing in the end. It's a better made film than something like Forrest Gump which is an example of mediocrity held up as a masterpiece.

I can't help but feel that the subject matter clouds peoples' judgement when it comes to it though. The random appearances in famous moments feels like such a gimmick and tom hanks ironically did in fact go 'full retard' in that role, it's cringeworthy. Inception may not reach the dizzy heights that the trailer/advertising campaign claimed but if you take it at face value I think it's an enjoyable adventure story like Raiders of the Lost Ark or something like that.hubb wrote:Not at all. The fact that Forrest Gump seems clumsy or camp is just that the cliché that we are annoyed by now - was made that exact time.
It's the same reason I hate Prince - 'every' other annoying thing that is done in pop music was something he already did. I feel like I can track every thing wrong with pop music and style back to him, but it seems like it worked the first time around for people that are into him.
It's a brilliant take on modern film noir I think. It's nicely slow paced, instead of manicLACE wrote:can someone explain to me why drive is a good movie? that movie sucked. and that goddamn song was stuck in my head for days after ''blah blah reeall human beeeeing..and a reeeal herrooo'' just awful. and campy in a bad way

Definitely as in clichéed as fuck now - but I'd still argue they hit home then. It is the nature of drama like that, that it is very shallow but effective. By now it's hilarious that he is both steve jobs producer and taught elvis presley how to dance as just plotpoints, but it wasn't really plotpoints when it unfolded sequentially the first time around. And the most clumsy examples are probably after thoughts in the film like the one I mentioned where 'Bubba invested it all in some fruit company' or whatever the line is, so it's not like it's key moments in the film. The random appearances in famous moments feels like such a gimmick and tom hanks ironically did in fact go 'full retard' in that role, it's cringeworthy.
If you like Tarkovsky you should enjoy ithubb wrote:just dl'd that Bela Tarr film btw - looking forward to that
Smashed it as Woody toowub wrote:Tom Hanks went through this annoying stage of thinking he could act serious serious during that time. Forrest Gump. Castaway. Saving Private Ryan.
Made me really miss stuff like Big, The Money Pit, The Burbs. He's better doing straight man roles in comedy than he is furrowing his brow and trying to win Oscars, IMO.
Still a great film in the last decade though imo.wolf89 wrote:Departed is a remake though. Where the original is better
