Gosh darnit... LEGO® is not a NOUN!!!! You cannot pluralize an adjectiveChu wrote:I'd agree, not much, but I think Science is one of the things we can be surer about in life, at least it's up there with the fact that the plural of Lego is Lego.guerillaeye wrote:What the "Bleep" Do We know
directors cut.
and "What the Bleep do we Know" is a documentary.. highly recomended.spell the brand name "LEGO" in capital letters and use it as an adjective and not a noun

Try and find the quantum edition.. deep!

Quantum Physics is very interesting but some of the ideas in the Bleep film are ridiculous. I would suggest the book "Quantum Enigma" by Bruce Rosenblum and Fred Kuttner, its pretty deep but it goes along way to explaining the weird links between philosophy and quantum physics without getting to spiritual or preachy. it will fuck ur head however

Hmmm. I don't know. Brane theory is a bit dodgy for my liking. Basically you are talking about extra dimensions that are wrapped up in branes, and sort of hidden from our 'view'. To be compatible with most larger scale string theories you are talking about 10+ dimensions, most of which are wrapped up and hidden away in branes. This many hidden dimensions gets a bit problematic, cos you have to work out where to "put them" (in your theory).Parson wrote: i'm thinking basically if you accept string theory and brane theory it accounts for the randomness, because both state that there are spacial dimensions beyond what we perceive. basically the electrons are moving in and out of spacial dimensions we don't know exist, and they appear to be doing random shit. einstein was never into the idea of randomness and neither am i.
As far as I'm aware, the predictions of such a theory haven't been observed yet, and so I'm still doubtful.
As with most of these theories, they are mostly a case of guessing at reality and seeing what results match, rather than the classical science of observing reality and finding a descriptive relationship... Which makes things pretty hard to believe without proof! But then the same goes for most unproven quantum theories (many of which, including most string theories, are taken almost as if true by many scientists).

The Emperor's New Mind by Roger Penrose is pretty good on AI and quantum physics, although he goes off into speculation without warning at the end.lloydnoise wrote:Quantum Physics is very interesting but some of the ideas in the Bleep film are ridiculous. Some of the current efforts at unified theories are a bit far out (I know a load of theoretical physicists, and they basically do masses of pure maths and then wonder whether they're going to get something that resembles reality in some way afaict[1]) but a lot of everyday stuff is totally based on quantum mechanics, eg we wouldn't be able to make the CCD that makes a digital camera work if we didn't know about semiconductor doping which is a totally quantum based idea. They've even got quantum computers up and running, which are some seriously mental shit (basically, produce a superposition of a load of different calculations, run them all simultaneously and then get some limited information about all the answers at the same time) even if they can currently only get up to about factorizing 15 into primes.
[1] I think the results from the new accelerator at CERN are going to put a lot of theories to the test, though
