Went to the Indian round the way from mine one time, first time I'd ever been to this particular joint. Anyways, I order the phaal and he's asking me if I'm sure, saying "even I can't eat this curry". Was the first time I'd ever eaten phaal, and it nearly brought me to my knees. Kept ducking out to the kitchen for a spoonful of ice cream to save face, rofl. Had another for tea the day after though, it's just too good - phaal on a garlic naan and no rice.

This thread's made me hungry :\ Might pop round there right now and pick up something.

Yeah the Phaals a lot, only ever had one as a takeaway - its all about flavour as well but done well you can still have some burn. The Thai's do it best, different "notes" of chilli's.

My brother's wife is thai and she cooks like a fucking goddess. Most of it is spicy and awesomely tasty. But one day she made this thin mushroom soup. It was supposed to be a sort of side dish. The mushrooms she used were weird as fuck - slimy, long and thin (a bit like magic mushrooms crossed with octopus tentacles) and the mouth heat generated by this innoccuous litte grey soup was litlerally mind blowing.

First taste was instant eye-watering badness, then the mushrooms took over the flavour for just an instant before the fire came back. Then - much like a good vodka - after swallowing there was peace for a moment, until BLAM! just when you thought it was all over someone poured lava into your mouth.

Literally the craziest hottest thing I've ever had. I have no idea if it was chilli or mustard or mace (she still to this day refuses to tell us the recipe) and to be honest I reckon it was all three, but it was mental, in a good way.

im tempted to get a phaal next time i have an indian. never had one, but my indian does 'tindaloo' which is supposedly between vindaloo and phaal. imo vindaloo is pussy and tindaloo is still far from uncomfortable, so im betting phaal aint so bad.

I never seem to see phaal on the menu - i managed a vindaloo just fine not long ago, tempted to try a phaal next time i go for a curry is it a big step up?

well to give you an idea with vindaloo i think 'this is basically a korma isnt it, why have the white people made a song about it and bigged it up so much'
tindaloo im thinking 'this is alright. could probably bump it up one more notch before going for the milk'

TBH it varies in different houses and a lot don't bother making the hotter ones like Paal (aka Phaal Pal). In some a Vindaloo is really hot and in others the Madras is hotter.

I've been told about a Tinderloo by a Chilli madman (snorted mad dog in a pub, crazy) and he thought it was hot but I might try one tonight if I can find it.

I have had Phaal once or twice and I find it practically inedible it is so hot.

I have had something hotter before, but in a different way.

Thai jungle curry. I felt like I had been anally fisted with broken glass for 5 days.

I eat that soup once a week. The version i've been eating recently also contains Flying Ants, their eggs, fermented fish and bamboo. The Ants provide a delicious nutty crunch to the soup.
The fire in Thai food is unique, it hits hard then disperses rather quickly only to return unexpected with a secondary booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom. I do fuck up my insides quite often living in Bangkok.
If anyone wants to appreciate real fire they need to come to Thailand and eat Som Tam, a Papaya salad which is not for the faint hearted.
