- One of the first paid gigs I ever had at Uni was for a private party. Had taken my decks/mixer round there, had plugged into the venues PA system. About 45mins after I'd started, had someone come up and tell me that I'd had crossfader turned off and had spent the time cueing up live over the system. Hadn't realised due to lack of monitors and using split cue in my headphones.
- Played main room Corsica not long after they'd upgraded to Funktion 1. Thought I'd be really cool and do a spinback of the last tune to 'announce' myself. Didn't realise the CDJ was in CD mode and not VINYL mode, so instead of a spinback all I need was drag the outgoing tune back a few beats, completely knock it out of time, then in my haste to correct it just had it do that stutter preview thing over the system. The 'announce' factor worked as the whole dancefloor stopped to stare at me.
- Some god awful house night I used to play at occasionally at Lightbox/Fire, proper antipodean crowd, 3am set so pretty pumping 'progressive electro' was what was required. Outgoing DJ was a proper dolly mixer, no discernible DJ talents other than a fake rack and low cut top who kept leaving her set to 'powder her nose' and occasionally had to have her BF/manager mix in the next tune if she took too long. She was playing a Serato set, so I had to mix in my first tune from the CDJ, then wait for her tune to be fully mixed out before swapping the phonos over and wiring up the second CDJ to mix in my next tune.
As soon as she saw the channel fader was up on my incoming tune she unplugged her laptop, completely killing the outgoing track. The incoming track I was mixing in had a fairly long intro so the dancefloor did an unfortunate lurch as the outgoing melody stopped and was replaced with another min of just kick/percussion.
- Over in Arizona at a Dubstep night in their downtown district, was fairly smashed after nailing 4Loko and Jaeger with the promoter and his friends prior to getting to the venue. Borgore was headlining, so I thought it would be 'really cool' to start filming with my camera over his shoulder and out at the dancefloor. Leant over too far at what point, knocked the needle, crowd all heckled me, so I walked backwards as quickly as possible, lost my footing and tumbled into the cable pit behind the stage. Had to be helped out by three technicians and a bouncer, took myself outside for a bit of fresh air and a quiet word with myself.

First real gig. Was playing on an unfamiliar mixer, and I was so nervous that I didnt realize I had cut the bass on one of the channels and hadn't turned it up. Skream's Glamma rolled for like 2 minutes before I realized what the fuck I had done.

A few years back I was Djing a medium sized club out my way. I was the Friday and Saturday night house dj, playing mostly top 40 shit. I had a cheap controller and an old laptop as I was piss poor at the time and living off of my dj wages. Anyways it developed this glitch where when you would hit play on a deck, it wouldn't go. Of course it happenned one night at the height of my set. On a mix that had to be slammed in at the right beat. The room was on fire as the track built to its crescendo and then slam...dead silence....crickets....200 drunks mid flail just staring at me as I repeatedly mashed the decks play button.
Not as bad as when I ...
Took a gig at a drag bar...5 hour set with an hour in the middle during which I was to play mix cds for the queens to lip sync too. Sounds easy right? Wrong. I was using my good old cheap laptop and controller. To play a cd I had to use the house cdjs. Nice pioneers, looked great...but apparently the previous dj spilled a few drinks on them during his tenure. Also the cds themselves where made and provided by the queens. So you never knew what was going to happen when you hit play. They would cut these mixes on magix or some shit and the levels would jump around and almost always redline the fuck out. Needless to say it was a lot of risk for me and a lot of variables I couldn't control. One night the biggest dude in drag ever is on stage lipsyncing to witney Houston when I thought his mix turned into glitch hop. His scratched ass cd began to tweak out as the cdj spit out the cd. Leaving the club and this huge dude in drag staring angrily at ME! I scrambled about to try and fix the cd when the queen barked at me to play his other cd. The rest of that night went fine, but it killed my enjoyment of that job. It made every night more stress than Djing for money fun. The bar was also constantly telling me to turn down the queens tracks and the queens where constantly telling me to turn it up.
It was hell and embarrassing...but nothing beats shaking a clubs Windows with booty music while 20 drag queens dog pile booty dance with a group of butch lesbians.
Crossed off bucket list:Dj a drag bar.

was running serato through cdj's when i opened for zeds dead. the "tracks" on the serato cd's only last for 16 minutes, so you should restart them after every track or else the music will stop.
i forgot to do this.
in front of 1500 people.
twice in the same set

Took to much k before djing at a houseparty in Manchester. person playing before me was using a controller i was using vinyl.
I start setting up and the other guy fucks off leaving me with a full room and no music as I'm trying to set up.
Playing with the tone-arm with a roomfull of people watching you and borderline k-holing is not the one.
I get going and trainwreck the first few mixes. It doesn't help that the left deck is running through channel 1 and the right one through channel 2.
Finally I'm mixing Objekt - Cactus into Xxxy - Know This Can't Be Love and its shaping up to be a good mix.
atmospheric build up with a devestating drop both tracks are completely synced.
Getting into things now just before the 2nd drop in cactus i think it wil sound sick if i spin back the xxxy tune on the drop.
In my k'ed state i end up pulling up cactus on the drop and let xxxy run out leaving the full room in silence again as i end up re-cuing cactus.
Dont take k before djing.

yeah this is me... in fairness i usually play vinyl
similarly, was at a party once and another dj dropped marka then disappeared somewhere. being pretty pissed, i decided to reach over and reload it, only problem was i pressed back on the cdj too many times and ended up having some other random dnb tune playing... couldnt make my way back to marka either

So one Time I'm spinning at the Blue note London (now defunct) & i have all my records in a box balanced on the Decks flight case, which seemed to be o.k... Untill some bloke about 25 stone try's to squeeze past the flight case & knocks it for six...
My records spill out, right across a packed dancefloor & the arm of the turntable drags across the record (signal for the crowd to spin around) The whole case smashes onto floor..
the records spill all over the deck & I'm left standing with my cans on me head, a face of horror & about 20 mashed records being stepped on.
The crowd look at me Like WTF & fat bloke is totally oblivious to what he has done..
I was angry embarrased gutted & wanted the ground to open up & consume me....
I lost about £200 worth of classic funk vinyl....

mate that 1s a killer, i so feel ya pain. if i was you i'd probly started crying like a 2year old there and then.
then i'd have killed or at least fucked up da fat guy.
seriously tho all those vinyl man fuck, only the other day my pile of the only reggae vinyl albums i have fell over on shelf like dominos.
my heart kinda stopped and the worst part is it happened 3 times in a fucking row.
really thought they may be fucked but after playing a few they seemed fine.
ps love soulfunk, only vinyl i have is booker n newbery lovetown/doin what comes naturally and i fucking love it.
really wanna start a collection of soulfunk vinyl but my money always goes on dubstep n odd old garage n grime oh n reggae.
need to concentrate on reggae and soulfunk. damn you rent and bills if not for you i'd be able to spend £1000 a month on vinyl.

little background
a decade ago I dj'd under the name traci_dub (long before the term dub was used in relation to dubstep, trahci is my middle name, that should cover all bassline questions).
so yeah here's even the link to the event... probably my third or fourth show after moving to missouri

anywho get to this venue... two rooms. Some dumbass starts a rumor Tech N9ne is coming (the event was outside KC a bit, and he did come to parties a lot, just not this one) and the place is packed wall to wall. The venue is a club, ABOVE another club. Very shitty sound, can fully hear the bass from the club below and the other room
So I'm watching the dj before me struggle and I'm not sure why.... im guessing trouble monitoring or something.... whatever I'm confident I can handle it, im gonna wreck this place.
My turn up and I get up to the decks. MOTHERFUCKING BELT DRIVE TURNTABLES. I ask the promoter what the fuck this is and he said you should be good and I get this sinking feeling. I get up and try and mix, backcue, skips. The turntables are skipping because of the bass from the club below. Absolute fucking disaster. I tell the promoter I can't dj on this shit. Promoter grabs the mic and says "sorry guys shitty dj says he can't dj because he's shitty". Absolutely humiliated.
My friend who is a bit more established comes up, stops the record says "tech n9ne in the side room everyone come in!" and puts on "It's alive" by tech n9ne which he had in his bag as it's a junglish tune and tells me to leave with him. We both walk out and get a call from the promoter "what the fuck was that shit man?" Apparently crowd was none to happy, everyone left, was big drama on our local messageboard (syquil at the time). Comedy fucking gold. The club was shut down a month later for liquor law violations and that event actually got me massive promotion and got me mad bookings in the midwest in the years to follow.
Easily the most embarassing horrible feeling I've ever felt as a DJ being shit on as a youngster by a promoter infront of a few hundred people. In hindsight was worth it

other random fact, Velvin, also listed on that event was dating Shandi Sullivan at the time (this was years before Americas Next Top Model). He is the poor bastard depicted in this video being told his girlfriend cheated on him
