Interesting. Sholay is definitely a percy but if you're going to pick it that presumably means you think Fat Larry's Skank is still dark garage or something? Not saying I think Fat Larry's Skank was the first myself but it's similar enough and earlier than Sholay to warrant the question.g.dot wrote:this.JBoy wrote:Like fractal said, its easy to catergorise loads of garage tracks that have dark and bassy elements and call them dubstep. whats the very first dubstep tune ever made????

Re: whats the very first dubstep tune ever made????
the questions is sort of pointless in the first place because it's a spectrum, not a black and white kind of thing. but i'd definitely say that horsepower productions or el b were the ones.
and then i'd also say that loefah's horror show really made the genre what it is. the state of dubstep before and after horror show was very different. more percussive before, and after it was more about the halfstep and extreme minimalism

Re: whats the very first dubstep tune ever made????
I think if you listen to horsepower's 1st album the majority of tracks are garage (which fat larry's skank is on). It also came out in that transitional period after garage had peaked a couple of years before and was heading towards that darker/breaks sound. Their 2nd album 'to the rescue' however imo was really the start of dubstep and in particular the track sholay. But it's all down to opinions....leyenda303 wrote:Interesting. Re: whats the very first dubstep tune ever made????
So who what was the first like dark garage song to have the snare on the third? I mean a lot of earlier dubstep like Benga and skream's the judgement, has a snare on the second and fourth

Trace this back to the definition of dubstep and you'll see: you can't answer this question.

Now that I think about it, a more relevant question is probably what early dubstep track had the biggest influence on the course of the genre. For that one I have to agree with those advocating Loefah's 'Horror Show'.

+1. if anyone has watched mala's rbma lecture youll know he advocates horror as well as the tune that changed the game, not saying just cause mala said it that its correct but he puts it in context well and makes some very valid points abt how the tune was different to what had come before it.leyenda303 wrote:Now that I think about it, a more relevant question is probably what early dubstep track had the biggest influence on the course of the genre. Yep. The effect Digital Mystikz had on Skream (by his own admission, can't remember what interview it's from) had a massive effect too. Compare his stuff like "The Judgement" (Percy!) and his stuff collabing with Benga to "Midnight Request Line", definitely moved further away from that Dark Garage sound to the more traditional Dubstep sound.hendramarshall wrote:+1. if anyone has watched mala's rbma lecture youll know he advocates horror as well as the tune that changed the game, not saying just cause mala said it that its correct but he puts it in context well and makes some very valid points abt how the tune was different to what had come before it.leyenda303 wrote:Now that I think about it, a more relevant question is probably what early dubstep track had the biggest influence on the course of the genre. Re: whats the very first dubstep tune ever made????
was Loe the first to do halfstep or did others do it before him ?
Re: whats the very first dubstep tune ever made????
Within dubstep, yes Horrow Show was the first. Wonder - What did it too but that's grime and I don't think it really had much influence on the dubstep scene.LumiNiscent wrote:was Loe the first to do halfstep or did others do it before him ?
Wish more of those dark garage sounding bits had come out though. Still pining for Disfunktional Mindz. Agree on The Judgement being awesome though.garethom wrote:Yep. Definitely. I've said before I wish that late-garage/proto-dubstep sound lasted longer.leyenda303 wrote:Wish more of those dark garage sounding bits had come out though. sounds like someone hasn't given up on the late-garage/proto-dubstep sound just yet!

Re: whats the very first dubstep tune ever made????
For me the first true "Dubstep" was around the DMZ001 release.. I personally saw El-B stuff as Garage and agree with Black, you cant really define the tune to start it as back then it was just all dark UKG until I saw hoursepower n DMZ... It used to take a lot of sorting through shitty dark UKG records before Hatcha would give you any of the under the counter badness!
Before DMZ01 is there any other DMZ tunes around? They cant have just build them 3 n that was the start, always wondered this as I'm sure liek with any produces they have to start way before they get signed! My mates used to do raves back in the day and have a tape of Mala and Coki MC'ing.... Yup, they MC'd! Funny the path life takes you on!
