right now i'm using an MPC2000-xl mcd (which is real nice with the flash cards instead zip or cds), microKorg synth, roland space echo re-201 old school tape delay box (stole it from my old high school bandmate who's dad was in the Four Seasons with Frankie Valli), emu sp1200, various sources for drums + samples...lots of vinyl sources....running everything into pro tools for recording and mixing.... i tried gettin into logic and reason a few times but i always found it much easier to get ideas down by banging away on hardware...i guess it depends on what kinda style you're looking for people will argue hardware vs. software is better...personally i don't think it matters really what you use just what the end result is....having a huge studio all hooked up or a little shitbox set up could produce similar sounding results so fuck it just do what you gotta do.

Heres my 2 cents...

I began with reason and have gotten some good results out of it but then I got cubase which really made reason's soundengine sound weak by comparison so I've started using reason less and less going for dedicated vsts. If your using reason I reccomend that you us it as a sound source into a sequencer that can use Vsti's and vst effects as this will help loose that 'reason' sound. I have now moved onto Ableton which is wicked! The midi implimentation really allows you to get your hands dirty if you've got a few controllers. You can really jam your tunes out after you've done some basic construction and midi mapping. Its sound engine sounds as good as cubase imo and its routing capabilities are excellent allowing endless capabilities.

What i'm using:

Sound Forge (Sample Maintainance and Mastering bits)
Ableton (All my sequencing)
Reason (ocassionally for sampling some of my old tunes)
Vst's (free vsts, trilogy, guru, stylus, bass station to name a few)
FX (Vst Fx Kaoss Pad2)
Controllers (Evolution UC-33, MK249c, Kaoss Pad2)
Sampler (MPC1000-Hooked up to ableton as audio and midi source)
Synths (Juno106, X-Station, Bass Station Rack -All borrowed hehe )

Ableton takes a bit to get your head round after using traditional seq's but they aint that different and it just clicks and makes sense after a few days.

CubSx3.1, Reason, Abelton, Rebirth (its free now!), SF 8, Z3ta, Blue, Albino, Luxonix stuff (the filters!), Kjaehus plugs, GLITCH dblue, hotmovies.com, Ozone (for masteing), and some viagra when i cant get it up...

I use Reason for making tunes, Soundforge for cutting stuff up/fucking with this and ReCycle for cutting up beats... that's it.

I want to learn Cubase or Logic though, I have mates that use them and the interfaces look really nice - plus I really wanna start using VSTs... then I'm not limited to just 2 synths which Reason has...

Well worth the $350 i had to pay for it.

theres alot a good software about these days so its what you most comfortable with i guess, but personaly nothing beats ableton an cubase, i also got re-birth again recently, its free now get it form the propeller heads site. the drums arent that great but i love the 303's so much, amazin acid sounds

Reason 3 (I get great beats and pads out of this)
Ableton 5 (this is awesome for live shit)
Logic 7 (Host)
External (Korg microKORG, Alesis Ion)
Various VST (Absynth, Antares Kantos, Antares Filter)

Right now I'm testing out some lo-fi graintable synthesis type 'Destructo' vst instruments. Looking for a way to incorporate them into any tunes I'm working on.

i used to make loops in reason and then export them into cubase sx and later nuendo (same shit pretty much)

but i really got sick of that process and now i just stay inside of reason for the sake of simplicity. i can make reason do what i want to do and the engine in reason 3 is best yet. people used to complain about it up through 2.5 but you can't fuck with 3.0 sound really.

i also make use of recycle and soundforge plenty

snap! everyone disses it, but hey i like it and its wot im used to.

doesn't really matter what you use does it.. as long as you get sick tunes out of it. people regarding software as lame are 99% of the time wankers who can't even produce a good sounding fart.

anyway i started off with impulse tracker about six years ago, just for fun.. then i got really into it and i'm using cubase sx2/logic express 7, wavelab/audacity and renoise mostly for dubstep purposes. i'm really into cycling 74 max/msp too but i don't really use it for dancefloor music.

reason is great for the redrum alone. i make all of my beats on this, twizzle with them a bit and then import them all into logic, twizzle with them some more and add everything else.

I reckon you lot use too much different software together, I couldnt imagine using more than two programs (which i do- reason and logic) to make music wth i reckon. I think its good to have a limited amount cuse then your forced to keep plugging away at what youve got and then you'll start learning how to really make the tracks sound how you want them too, i.e eq, compression etc.

How do people get along with eqing and compressing in reason, Having to go by what your ear is telling you all the time is a bit daunting in my opinion, how do you reason heads get on with it and do you have any tips??
