Scroobious Pip and Saul Williams are the most important people in intelegent hip hop at the moment, if your not familiar with their work take a moment to check it out
also listen to the Flobots album, it is very very good.

I've never quite got into KRS-One either... always figured he was a little before my time, like I missed the boat on hearing him when he was still all fresh... he's always sounded a little tired to me.
Plus all that Elements bullshit is annoying. He's so fucking self-righteous.

which song in particular are you talking about here? cause if you've listened to the whole of angles and don't think he's an "inteligent lyricist" then you clear have the bass up too high!

Yeah, no flow, pretentious bordering on patronising. Beats are really, really crap too.

i don't really know about uk hip hop. lewis parker's productions for ghostface killah, k-lash and random impulse is about the limit of my knowledge i'm afraid...

Horses for courses

Lewis Parker is a better beat maker than lyricist imo

much as i love krs one, some of his songs could be considered 'gangster' (shock horror!) so i'm sure the original poster wouldn't be interested
and in general, the best uk hip hop can't really compete with the best of us hip hop, that's probably why people tend to discuss it more. there's a lot of garbage on both sides of the pond though

has anyone mentioned kool g rap? may not be 'concious' enough for some of you people

but damn he mad nice

you can't mention kool g rap without mentioning big daddy kane
d.i.t.c too,
lord finesse, he has one of the sickest flows of any mc ever.
and percee p.
maybe kmd? get monsta island czars - escape from monsta island, its mf doom and grimm from back in the day, sick album.
i get ripped on for loving it but get the dark sun riders' self titled album. its on island. its a proper album with a story, underrated imo.
there's lots of non gangsta hip hop out there.
maybe try special ed if you like it old skool?
you probably won't do much better than jeru the damaja & premier though
