Trust me, i was on Ableton for 2 years, sooner or later you'll get sick of hearing awesomely polished tracks and thinking, 'why can't I do that' and make the switch.

That's what happened to me anyway.
i dont understand.
He's saying it took him two years to learn to mix properly, and during that period he held his tools accountable for his own shortcomings... Image

Of course, had he started with Reaper none of this would have been a problem... The ability to turn out great mixes would have come naturally to him from the very first hour. :dunce:

Lmao, I take it there's a big army of people who are still very Ableton orientated. Nope, I still have my Ableton 7 license and run it on my Mac. Creatively it destroys logic, and I'm able to be much more inventive using it, but my Logic mixes still beat it into the dirt every time. Now if only it woul;d allow me to use my plugins whilst working as Rewire Slave! That would be epic!

This thread makes me want to play around with reaper... I have it, just never really played around with it.

I prefer Logic for several reasons:
-I got tired of PC's getting viruses - I tried not looking at porn and they still got viruses. So far so good on the Mac. It's a shame they're outrageously overpriced.
-I started in Garageband, so the transition to Logic was pretty easy.
-The loop library is set up really well
-Space Designer and Sculpture are the shit.
-Rewire to Reason is very well integrated (Never tried it in other DAWs though, so I can't speak on that)
-Can import channel strip settings and entire tracks, including automation, from another project.
-Flex Time

Cons:
-Arpeggiator is hard to set up and pretty much useless
-Environment window is versatile but very intimidating
-No Vst support, AU only, which means you can't do things that you can in other DAW's such as assigning and LFO to a knob on any synth, or use some of the cool functions that plugins like CableGuys LFO shaper (whatever it's called, something like that) or Xfer Records LFO tool
-CPU hungry
-stupid little things that you have to manually change in preferences - like the whole sample-accurate automation deal.

Why I don't use other DAW's:
-"FL Studio" has some really cool stuff, but the workflow makes absolutely no sense and no matter what, people will still make fun of you for using it. Using FL Studio is kind of like driving a Mazda Miata - Sure, it's probably fun as hell to drive, but people will still call you a cigarette for owning one. Oh wait, it's not called a Miata anymore, it's called an MX-5. Well, sorry. Everyone still thinks of it as a Miata.
-Reason/Record: No 3rd party plugin support, and although there are some creative routing options, it's still a pain in the ass. I still use Reason rewired to Logic though. It would be interesting to see how many people buy Reason to use as a plugin compared to how many buy it to use by itself.
-Ableton: really cool midi options, I want to learn it for future live use, but I just don't get it. Interface makes no sense to me.
-Renoise: WTF is Renoise
-Cubase: Do they make this for mac?
-Pro Tools: The least user-friendly DAW in existence. Everyone that uses Pro Tools thinks they are better than you for knowing how to use it. I have it and only use it for the M-Box and the plugins it came with (Ozone and Analog Factory) because I couldn't wrap my head around it. I've heard it's badass for audio editing though. I will be getting PT certified soon, so I guess I'll have to learn it.
-Reaper: I don't have any good excuse for this, other than I tried to figure it out and gave up after about 30 mins because I wanted to work on a song in Logic instead. This thread makes me want to get into it though. I remember watching a Youtube video on sound design and the guy said he uses both Reaper and Logic.

I use FL, and I have to agree, that the windows get on my nerves daily, if i had another monitor to pull everything to the other side it wouldn't be such a headache, constantly clicking an dragging shit away..... I've used logic, but eh, not really that into it, and I can also agree that macs are overpriced, under powered cool kid computers... I'm tired of seeing djmacbook everywhere I go... more like djF*ckhead... epic face palm...

As far as the playlist editor in FL, never had any problems with spacing or placement, so long as you adjust the snap settings to whatever clips your working with... buuut it is what it is... alot of good music comes out of any DAW, its just whats comfortable for you an whatnot.

and f*uck soundgooderizer... wtf?
what is this world coming to?

Let me just say that I love reading this thread.

I started electronic production on Reason 3. I wanted to use live audio so I looked for a traditional sequence. I switched to Cubase because Black Sun Empire and Chase & Status used it. Yeah, I know.

I'm still rocking Cubase on OSX, but I plan to switch to Ableton once it goes 64bit. I only know a fraction of things that Cubase can do, but I experimented and learned more with Ableton in 2 weeks more than I know currently in Cubase. The Cubase layout doesn't make much sense IMO, routing took a while to learn, automation is a complete PTA, mixing is difficult because 'undo'/etc. doesn't apply to the mixer, EVERYTHING opens in a new window that either covers up the sequencer or disappears when you click anywhere else. I also can't figure out how to use Battery 3 to route separate drum hits to mono chanels, only stereo. Hopefully I don't just have a case of "greener grass."

Does anyone know why some people say not to use Ableton for traditional band recording? Seems like it does all that fine to me. Also, Logic just doesn't feel right to me. Idk why. Maybe the layout isn't complicated enough lol.

I never hated on a program for sound quality ever since I learned Flying Lotus uses Reason 3, Hudson Mohawke uses FL, Black Sun Empire uses everything, Rusko uses Acid, Skrillex producers/masters in Ableton, etc. Regardless, I don't like that Logic (apparently?) has a hardcoded limiter.

Reaper has a little elf on the master buss who takes a rag and polishes all the audio that comes through. His name is Walter.
