I reckon most of yesterdays upset was done 'for the lulz' tbh.

No political motive or agenda, just a bit of a giggle and some free stuff that many people can't normally afford.

It doesn't make it right, but I understand it, because it's the sort of thing I was doing when I was 14!

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast urged the British government to order the police to stop their violent confrontation with the people, IRNA reported in the early hours of Tuesday.

Mehmanparast asked the British government to start dialogue with the protesters and to listen to their demands in order to calm the situation down.

My point is that if all the man this country has elected as leader can do is come out and say it's "sickening" then why not elect a monkey, or me. I could do that job. Of course it's fucking sickening. And of course he was going to say that - I didn't actually think he'd side with the rioters.

When people were clamoring for the gov't to make a statement and show some kind of initiative, what they wanted was not a useless soundbite that could have come from LITERALLY ANYONE, what they wanted was genuine ideas. He has none, clearly.

I'd say in this case they do have quite a moral high ground over people that burn down local shops and houses for fun!

@nicenice, sounds like you condone all of this, it has nothing to do with race or class, just people being bastards for the sake of it. I bet half of the people involved have just jumped on it for the fun factor.

I never said what they are doing is justifiable. Its alright when a largely middle class and educated population goes out to smash shop windows on oxford street and cause havok in London but when the poor do it the educated and middle class just can't understand why anyone would want to do this.

I'm in Hackney. Riot police at both ends of our road last night. All the local crews out, seemingly primarily focused on getting one over on the police with grabbing some shit a secondary consideration.

And the amount of spectators was amazing too, loads of whom were taking photos and video. Thats a new development from the last time it kicked off in London like this - police can't crack heads with impunity anymore.

The media, government and police narrative is straightforward and consistent - this is a criminal action, stupid knuckleheads etc. Many of the commentators on this thread seem to agree with this, and so do I. But I think it is a mistake to stop looking at the causes of this situation at this point.

What about the violent and provocative actions of the police, such as the Ian Tomlinson case? What about youth unemployment going through the roof, leaving many people without much hope for the future? What about our political and economic system that functions to consistently enrich certain sections of the community and exclude others?

Maybe these aren't relevant, but politicians and the media seem to want to shut down these questions rather than open them up. I think that is a mistake.
