People Are Wasting UKIP’s Money By Sending Bricks To The Party’s Freepost Address

Opponents of UKIP are sending hundreds of items, including bricks, to the party’s Freepost address in the hope of running up a massive postal bill for the party.

The Royal Mail service enables any member of the public to send anything to an organisation with a Freepost address, with the recipient picking up the bill.

When a similar protest hit Nottinghamshire Lib Dems the police said it was not a crime to send bricks to a Freepost address.

Nigel Farage and Ukip asked to leave Bell Inn pub in Bath

Ukip leader Nigel Farage was asked to leave a Bath pub today, the venue having been chosen to host the launch of his party’s European elections campaign in the South West.

After turning up at the Bell Inn on Walcot Street - famous for its collection of independent traders - with his entourage and a BBC film crew, Mr Farage was told it was ‘inappropriate’.

The venue was chosen by local businessman Martin Tracy as a way of promoting Walcot Street but pub manager Jamie Matthews objected.

On the pub’s Facebook page, senior manager Mr Matthews wrote: “Just had UKIP leader Nigel Farage and his be-suited henchmen in the pub with a BBC News film crew. Avoiding any actual political argument, I told him that he was welcome as a citizen to have a pint – we are, after all, a public house – but it was inappropriate for him to be using our premises for his hustings. I asked the camera man to stop filming.

“Most of the entourage then finished or left their drinks and went outside. They may have continued filming outside, I don’t know, but that is the public highway and they have every right to.

“Martin Tracy of The Framing Workshop said he’d brought them in as he thought it would help raise the profile of Walcot Street. He had the decency to apologise when he realised how inapt that was.”

He added later: "I did not kick him out."

Mr Tracy, who represents Walcot Street's traders, told the Western Daily Press this afternoon: "I don't align myself with any political party; I never have.

"He arrived early and everybody knows he likes a beer, so I thought it would be a great way to get Walcot Street some publicity and show off the Bell as a great example of a community coming together.

"We walked up he road and I introduced him to some of the small businesses, who chatted to him about the problems they are having.

"Then we went to the pub, where the staff were fine but Jamie said it was not appropriate."

The Bell – a favourite with Bath musicians – was saved from closure after residents and regulars raised £500,000 in a campaign backed by Peter Gabriel, Midge Ure and Robert Plant.

During an interview for the BBC, Bell regular Gary is seen walking behind Mr Farage making an obscene gesture with his hand - nicknamed the Farage Wave - before walking into the pub.

A 40 second clip of the interview has now been posted on YouTube and watched by 2,799 people.

After being inundated with requests to buy Gary a pint staff at The Bell have set up a PayPal account which has so far raise £250.

On its website the pub said: “Due to popular demand we have set up a PayPal donation page for the originator of the Farage Wave.”
