Generally movie critics (ebert and siskel being the most obvious) and many people in the general public think that horror movies are somehow sexist towards women. Claiming that it's always male aggression towards vulnerable female characters.

However while I believe that there are many more aspects to be discussed regarding how horror can relate to sex, gender roles and their connection to overall society I would say if you were to just view horror films in regards to the female characters' roles in the films and the way the audience relates to them they're actually closer to holding a feminist message.

Look at the slasher. The general structure goes that the killer is a dark undefined figure of aggression in most cases leaving the viewer to identify with those being hunted and killed. Out of that group the male characters are barely developed beyond being typically masculine in their approach to the situation before being killed early on. The dizzy panicky female characters who rely on others are usually next leaving a final female character who has been the only clearly intelligent and independent thinking character of the movie. Not to mention the only one developed to a point that the audience understands them and identifies with them. This character usually through their own power manages to escape from or defeat the killer. Therefore pretty much all slasher movies promote the idea that strong female characters can defeat the evil usually male aggressor.

Think of movies like alien too with Ripley or any film where a woman takes revenge on the men who assaulted her (the rape/revenge subgenre for instance)

In all these cases a largely male audience is made to identify greatly with a female character more than anyone else in the movie. I can't think of any genre which actually does this.

oh man, i feel you. i've always played PC since i was a kid... i remember the first time i went up against some friends in mw or mw2 (cant remember) and ended up wiping the floor with em because i was used to playing without aim assist
