Isn't it something to do with the gases released? By burning it there's less harmful shit put into the atmosphere than if its just left to run it's course?

Not sure about that. But burning it likely does prevent it from falling back to the ground where it will damage land-based ecosystems. That is at the expense of all the CO2 being emitted as a consequence of burning though.

Not sure why they do it, I think there's a way to put those out with dynamite if I recall though.
