If we're really going to compare lean spells and consistency how about the facts that Arsenal hold the record for the longest period in the top flight (only ever relegated once during WW1, the 'modern' team has never been relegated), have qualified for the Champions League every time they've tried and even taking into account Liverpool's '80s dominance and Manchester United's '90s dominance were, on aggregate, the most successful league side in the UK over the entire 20th Century as well as the only side *ever* to have won a championship undefeated over 38 games.

Chelsea's a flash in pan. New money Bingo winners chucking cash around like it's going out of fashion compared to Arsenal's aristocratic stability and Manchester United's foundations of empire. As soon as Roman and gets bored, they'll be mid table again... they haven't got the stadium, the numbers of die-hard fans or even the neutral fan's good will (unlike Liverpool who *will* inevitably be back).

tl;dr 10 lean years means fuck all when you've got a history like Arsenal's; it means everything when you've got a history like Chelsea's.

Every time it's been possible for Arsenal, they've done it. I.e. Every time the Champions League has happened.

I was trying to separate it from the European Cup which I'm sure we missed out on a few times, but I chose very poor words.

Yes, but a Chelsea fan is asking if 9 years of lean for Arsenal would be "redeemed" with an FA Cup, so it makes sense to compare what a 9 year lean spell means to both clubs. A 9 year lean spell for Arsenal is against the grain and given the club's history is a blip requiring no "redemption"... a 9 year lean spell for Chelsea would be back to business as usual. Their great form over the last 9 years is their blip.

We havn't been in the champions league every season...

So your argument is because they've won stuff (a fair bit of stuff) in the last 9yrs whilst you haven't, that the last decade for them has been a blip and for you it's just a pothole?

I think it's a fairly simple point.

Look at Chelsea's history for 100 years and compare it to Arsenal's for 100 years... the most successful league club of the 20th Century and a reliable top four for almost all of the Premiership years. One club can reasonably expect to be challenging for titles in another 100 years time, one's still got a long way to go. 9 years means little to one of them, means a lot to the other.

I disagree with this, if you aren't competitive then 9 years isn't a long time to not win anything, if you are competitive it is.

I don't think football is all about the winning though, I love winning, I remember we used to do it a lot and my perspective may reflect that there's been less of it recently but I will not consider this season a bad season because Liverpool haven't won anything, assuming a distinct lack of miracles come Sunday.

I can't say I'm that proud of the league cup thing but as a supporter going to Wembley or Cardiff and winning a pot is great.

What if Chelsea's recent success is part of their legacy that fans are proud of? To dismiss it and say it doesn't count/is less valid that a longer history of success is a bit backward, regardless of what team we're talking about.
