In most cases, Americans are arguably right unfortunately. Most of the words that we disagree on were used the 'American' way at the time of the Pilgrims'nem sailing. We were the ones that started to introduce ou's and lose the under from underpants.

The guy who first isolated Aluminium (and therefore got to choose what it was called) chose Aluminum. Sciencey folks threw their toys out of their pram because it didn't fit the trend of ending metals with ium and changed it, but it's arguable that both are "correct" really.
