my laptop's died looks like it's the hard drive that failed and it seems to be a known issue with my model so i may be able to get it replaced for free even though i have no warranty. the info i found seems to suggest that the free replacement expired in august 2010 so i'm not sure

What make and model is it? :

it's one of the old(ish) black macbooks. model number says its A1181

it seems to be an issue with the hard drives in the white and black macbooks bought around 2007/2008

i got mine second hand so i really don't know where i'd stand on getting a replacement. i phoned up a bit ago and they wanted the serial number so going to have to get that when i go home later, but they said they might be able to find details if i gave them my phone number which obviously wouldn't be mine as it wasn't bought by me. do all macs get registered to the user when they're bought? i should have asked when i was on the phone really but i didn't think about it until afterwards

Not too sure really, I know with laptops they have their MAC adresses that single out your specific machine but never checked for macbooks sorry.

If it's HDD fail, might be the connection or maybe some corruption due to use.

i think it's the connection. it makes a horrible clicking sound that sounds as if it's the heads not connecting/reading it properly and when it loads up it stays at the white screen and then after a bit a folder with a question mark comes up

worst case scenario is probably that i have to buy a new hard drive and lose the data that wasn't backed up
