1. Do a simle reese bass.
2. Turn on and automate the scream filter.
3. Select frequency shifter in insert 1.
4. Dry/wet 50/50, and move the frequency a bit to the left.
Here's a bit I made this morning that's got a little growl in it. I've got three oscillators automating the WT-position for the movement, then an automated bandreject filter and some distortion and stuff inside massive. Then the whole thing goes through an automated EQ, multiband comp, a flanger and then some more distortion.
I think it's the core sound in massive that's just too, all over the place, but I can't really get it to sit right.
How many oscillators do you guys usually use? I'm thinking maybe I need to back and have just one or two oscillators and then really work on that until it sounds basically how I want it before fx. I'm not too sure how much processing I need to be doing, now there's a lot of difference between the dry and the wet sounds.
Edit: By the way guys, note that I posted one of my shitty growls so it would be more obvious, don't judge me
This growl would be awesome for glitch hop!
You get that weird timbre, because you have not enough harmonics and you start to distort it.
You can try to layer few synths which will obviously give you full and rich harmonic content.
And another tip, make sure your growl isn't too messy inb4 distorting... I mean, it's not talking like ASIUHGRBEUIYASSSARGHH, but more like, BLEARGHHHHHH. The distortion process will turn it to filthy OIUMASDFOIUEJAUUUUUEEE, but if you were to distort ASIUHGRBEUIYASSSARGHH one, you would get OIUMASDFOIUEJAUUUUUEEE that sounds like crap.
To get that not too messy growl, you can add low pass filter inb4 distortion, and then automate it as you are automating your other eqs/filters.
I think you know what I mean?

It's obvious... you are using just a one, simple saw wave. Don't you think it has not enough harmonics?
You can add another square wave, one octave higher, you know, use all 3 oscillators

Hmm, yeah I get what you mean. I'm pretty sure I can get the processing right, I just have trouble with the core sound. It would be cool to check out one of your patches or something if you don't mind, just to hear it and see it in action, dry. Like, I don't really know when the sound is good enough to start processing it etc.
Anyway, thanks a lot man for the help man, appreciate it!

I made this clip showing each step while making that growl bass. Please keep in mind that this growl wasn't made as ktn's growl recreation, I just used his pattern
First, I show you each oscillator. Then I play them all. Then I add two filters. First one is scream filter, second one is band reject. They are running in series, not parallel. Then I start adding effetcs. Afair first one is feedback, then parabolic and sine shaper, then t tube, then dimension expander, then eq, then camel phat, then flanger, then another camel phat. yeah.
Oh, and at the end I decided not to stop the song because it's so fucking catchy and stuff
It's like having sex and deciding to stop right before the orgasm. Who would do that?

@Sechah
First of all it's not ktn recreation! It differs pretty much a lot from ktn's one.
Second k, do you use fl studio?

Yea I use FL, and I just said the KTN growl because you used his bass line as reference haha.
Anyways, shoot me a PM if you want to show me that way or whatever! Thanks!

Ableton's one sucks hard. The automation is just bitch.
I miss things like instrument rack and macros in fl studio... I hope they add shit like this in newer versions.
I haven't used ableton for much at all but isn't the instrument rack the same as a layer in FL?
I'm not really up on what the instrument rack and macro parts of ableton are but I thought the instrument rack was pretty much just instruments on the same channel playing off the same midi input or whatever lol not sure if that even makes sense I guess I could delete it but...
