Given it the "lying in bed almost asleep" test, Kindred (or the tunes that compose it) definitely reminds me of Untrue-era Burial whereas Loner seems to be hinting at newer directions. Ashtray Wasp seems a blend of both. Stunning Ep, 30 minutes of new Burial for £2.50 is not bad at all. Very very happy with this.
Also, totally agree with this perhaps being an example of the segments sent to Kode9. Kind of cool to get a glimpse of it.

Yeah, it's growing on me. After a couple actual listens I'm pretty happy with it.

I personally think that this ep and Street Halo both sound like Burial in his truest form. It has no form tied to a scene or genre specifically but instead brings together all that he loves about music and creating music. He's no longer trying to digest his influences. If you listed to the Kode9 & Burial Mary Anne Hobbs mix as well as the mix Kode did pre-Untrue you can see easily this is a logical progression for him.
I personally love it as much as the first time I heard 'South London Boroughs' so long ago... Am also glad to see him bring the darkside vibes back in to balance Street Halo's lovelorn euphoria.
Here's a quote from the man himself circa 2009 via Factmag Interview:
"I feel closer to what I want…something that takes garage, jungle, dubstep, all the things I like, and unites them in some way, and also unites the people that love that music."

that's what i thought while listening to stolen dog. there's a ableton-like beat repeat on the vocals and the flanging effect on drums in ashtray wasp sounds exactly like a preset for abletons flanger.

Listening to this at work. Swear I've counted about 20 different "tracks" now. Get a mixtape feel listening to this and the massive attack release. It's so sick.

this agree 100%, my favourite burial release by a mile. Ashtray wasp is a masterpiece love the different types of tunes he has managed to put in this ep agree with this has a mixtape feel proper comedown music.

Took a day off today. Woke up, bought the WAVs, layed down on the couch in my room and played the EP.
It was just amazing... Dark room, the house was starting to heat up, me still being sleepy... What a fantastic EP.
And yes, it is indeed different from his earlier work, but yet again he manages to hit me on such an emotional level with his music... I don't know how he does it.

ashtray wasp has to be one of the best burial tunes i've ever heard tho

just gave it the wav/headphone treatment myself.
Midrange in 'Kindred' is indeed rude. I still like the tempo in that one. It's got a good structure to it, intro - main part 1 - breakdown - main part 2 - outro. Solid production.
Loner is a more contemporary approach to dance music, but its melodies work quite well and I'm quite pleased with the track. As some have mentioned, the end part is pretty fucking solid as well!
Ashtray Wasp is just a mixtape of like four different tracks really. I think some work some don't. It's certainly the most challenging track on there and a bit hit and miss for me.
Overall, this and the Street Halo EP Prove to me that Burial is still making relevant and edgepushing sounds even after half a dozen years. This just raises more appetite for a new studio album, though I'm not sure he still wants to work with that format given the "mixtape" like feel of this one and the recent Massive Attack remixes/collabs.

Yeah, I think I wrote that down a little bit wrong: not saying a studio album is better than a mixtape, by no means! I too would applaud said symphony, just wanted to say that the chances of a new album look even remoter now, despite new material.
