Whats peoples view on the English obsession of having players who play in the domestic league?
Was talking to my mate about it the other day and I don't think theres many, if any, other international squads which consistently have players from their domestic league. I recall when Hargreaves was at Bayern there were comments about him playing abroad and not proving himself in the Prem.. same when Beckham moved to LA Galaxy it was basically said his international career was over. Although the Prem is probably the best league in the world, others aren't that far behind now and I'd much rather be picking players who are consistently playing top flight football abroad than some mid-table player on the bench in the Prem. I feel like moving abroad is a bit stigmatised for English players and we'd rather them sit on the bench here than get game time abroad.
I definitely feel like this weird obsession has limited our choices as a nation.. the Prem is just too competitive and unless you're something special (Shaw/Sterling) you don't get a look in.
I think it'd be beneficial to encourage English players to go abroad.

Diego Costa out of the CL final injured, potentially disrupts his WC too.

I don't think it's necessarily about playing in the domestic league but playing in a competitive one. I think playing in Canada or the US may have an adverse impact but Hargreaves still got picked playing for Bayern and Beckham was picked while playing for Real. I think it's more the case that top english players tend not to go abroad at their peak.

English players don't seem to go abroad at all, in our current squad we have 1 player outside the prem which is Fraser Forster.. one cap to his name. Yeah Hargreaves & Beckham got picked but I used them as an example of the general attitude to them moving. Its like if you don't play in the prem you're already at a disadvantage, it'd be better to sit on the bench at a prem club than play abroad.
Spains squad is so strong because they have players all over the place.. their main first team players are mostly from Madrid or Barca just like our main players are from United/City/Chelsea/Arsenal but their squad is quite varied in terms of the leagues they play in.
I think encouraging young players to go abroad may improve the quality and quantity of our "pool of players". If Sturridge didn't have the incredible season he has we'd be stuck with Welbeck as 2nd choice.. such a forgettable player. I think someone like Milner would benefit from moving abroad.

really?
outside the top 4 or 5 la liga is pretty dreadful
i mean the top 10 teams in england are definitely better than the top 10 spanish teams dont you think?
loool noo spanish league is awful, just defensive teams that pay too much attention to their managers instead of playing football.

I don't really care about International football so take this fwiw but I don't think you can claim that it'd be better to sit on the bench in the prem than play abroad unless you are claiming there are players that would go abroad if they weren't scared of losing their place in the England team and I don't know that's true.
Spain have players all over the place because their players are good enough to command interest from the biggest spenders in European football.
When Spain won the world cup in 2010 they had 3 players from outside La Liga Torres who we broke our record for Fabregas who Arsenal signed before Barca could and Reina as 3rd choice keeper

Hodgson's took a massive risk taking a predominantly young squad but who else do we play, Gareth Barry, Peter Crouch? I think he had no choice to take one peppered with experinced players like Lamps and Gerrard. And he might have dropped a bollock not taking Cole-Baines hasn't been over-whelming for the English squad and Shaw looked good in an otherwise average back four at Soton. A lot of players have been taken on the back of one good season and little to no good performances in an England shirt, I think we'd play well and should win the group but we're a perennial quarter final team, it's in our blood. We'll get found out against the likes of Spain and Argentina. And also I'd play Jones or Smalling at RB instead of Glen Johnson who I just don't rate.

True about Spain in 2010, but thats changed now and is always changing.. England consistently have very few players outside the Prem. I don't think players are scared of losing their place but staying in the prem is an advantage, if you can sit on the bench in a prem team you'll always be considered because of how shit our pool of players is. I don't see why players like Welbeck or Milner are content with sitting on the bench when they could perform at a foreign team, if they were Italian/French/Spanish and sitting on the bench there they'd have no issue with moving, English players seem to feel the need to stay here.. for whatever reason.
Relying on top 4/5/6 prem teams to constantly produce our national team can't be good.. just such a lack of choice because no English players seem to venture outside the Prem and they're having to constantly compete for a place with some of the best players in the world that are being imported.

Welbeck would still be shocking.

Yeah I agree with a lot of this and in fairness both Arbeloa and Alonso had played for Liverpool but were back in Madrid by then.
Top clubs have to name at least 7 homegrown players in their premiership squad if they want to name a full 25. This increases the fees clubs can charge the likes of Man City for homegrown players which results in Milner, Lescott and Rodwell being worth > 20m. With those kinds of transfer fees come big contracts so the players are incentivised to sign and stay. The problem is that City are also hoovering up the best talent from abroad so some of the domestic players aren't playing. City and Chelsea's squads are ridiculous the reason the English players aren't playing is because they aren't as good as the other players they've bought.
Historically British players seem not to have travelled that well or that often

If he was just as shit at a foreign club would he get a look in? I don't know.. hence why hes probably happy to be 3rd choice striker. 3rd choice for United and 3rd choice for England says it all.. the requirements seem to be if you're English and playing for a top half team you're in with shout for the national team.. why bother going abroad?
All 3 of Citys flops - Richards, Sinclair and Rodwell - could go abroad, but you won't see it.. maybe foreign teams just don't want them but I suspect its more the fact they're content with sitting on the bench in England.
Even if they went to average clubs like Leverkusen or something, at least they'd be an option who get regular game time for their club instead of just being forgotten players because they can't compete for a place in a ridiculous City squad.

They don't have to go abroad though the ordinary ones could just go to another premiership team and get game time but for significantly less money

Yeah I'm not saying they have to leave England but its highly unlikely that leaving England will ever be a realistic option to any of them and I don't get why.

That would be a massive step down

I think think he'll go back to Barcelona if he leaves. He's probably doing a 'Wayne Rooney' so he gets a better contract.
