And the Free Market's isn't? Perspective, mate... everything leads to everything, there's never a single cause. The Free Market has plenty of plus points (and was probably the best social invention of the 18th Century - thankyou Mr Walpole), as does the Welfare State. The trick is finding a balance.

Of course, I wouldn't expect all our cousins on the other side of the pond to be as pro-Welfare State as us Europeans - since McCarthy it's seemed pretty difficult for anyone to say anything remotely socialist over there without being branded a "Red" - but to say that it's just there to make you a "vassal of the state" is not only paranoid, it's pretty short sighted and, well, underthought, too. The Welfare State is something that was forced into existance by popular movements, it's something the "State" has had to accept, not something it created to make you it's bitch.

What about the market is free? To a lot of people, the EU is embodiment of free trade, but I don't see what's free about it at all. Capitalism doesn't equal free market. The market is highly regulated.

Nobody currently living has ever witnessed a truly free market, so any talk about the pro's and con's of the free market is theoretical. And I think you have far too much naivety when it comes to the good will of the hand that feeds you. Those in power would murder you like a dog in the street for 1 good day in the news cycle. Put that in perspective.
