Producers willing to contribute tracks

[ Producers remember that you have until 17.02.06. to upload your tracks. Regarding FTP access, pm Mr. Andythetwig and he will give you the login details ; don't forget to pay attention to the upload procedure as stated by Mr. Andythetwig :

. 1xwav or 3xmp3 (320kb/s) per person (50mb limit)

. naming convention: artist_title.wav ]

some producers may not want high quality versions of their music on an ftp server that's open to so many people.

If this is the case, email me and I will take the tracks from the server and keep them locally until whoever's mixing the compilation needs them.

I'm in for this project. My stuff might be a bit left of the straightahead dubstep sound, but if we're keeping it diverse, could be ok.

Maybe we need to have a chat session (or 10) for everyone interested to be able to talk through ideas on how it might work out? Everyone have IRC?

can you make it like this: producers can upload their tracks on FTP server but noone can download tracks from server (until whoever's mixing the compilation needs them)

ya i'll try to finish it tonight. i already have the form worked out...now i have just got to write the script.

On the subject of ftp space and file size/format. Would it not make most sense for the producers to upload 2 or 3 mp3's to the ftp for the dj's to choose from. Once a track listing has been finalised the producers can upload/send only the tracks that are going to be used in high quality.

That would save on space, and allow for a wider choice of tracks for the mix.

OK:

how are we planning to release this? some suggstions:

CD mix
CD indvidual tracks
ditto the other two with vinyl samplers
downloadable mix
downloadable tracks only
...etc...

these are some suggestions. I don't have a problem about discussing these in public on here, since it's a forum compilation but I'm less keen about discussing the financial implications of all of the above. I can say, however, that they are all viable, but only if we move quickly.

So what I am saying is this: people who are GENUINELY up for this (i.e. willing to put in money) should contact me and I will manage the process. Any objections to that premise should be either aired here or in person to me and I will report them back confidentially.

I think a downloadable mix would work well. The problem with doing CDs is that to get proper pressed CDs, you need to order a minimum quantity, such as 500 or 1000. To get a lower price per disc, you need to order higher quantities. If you do by request CDs, the price per disc is really high, unless you distribute CD-Rs.

If you do CD-Rs then someone, usually one person alone is responsible for printing the artwork, labelling the CDs, etc., which can drive up the cost. With a downloadable mix, you can post the artwork and disc label and these can be printed off as people wish.

If there is enough interest/potential customers, nothing quite matches a properly done CD.

Good points Brett,

Things always change once money gets involved, either buying or selling.
So maybe the best way to start is the net label style, where mixes and artwork are downloadable. (There's a great minimal-tech net label www.thinner.cc if anyone wants to see how it works elsewhere)

If there's going to be a manufactured CD we'd probably need to get into some sort of basic contract/agreement for use etc (trust me, we would!)
Imagine if you found someone flogging your tracks in Brixton market without asking you. Then suddenly the whole basis would change.

but....how about this for an idea: Producers submit mp3 demos, then DJ's listen through, choose which tunes they want to mix. We then upload full quality audio of required tracks. DJ's download, then submit mixed audio files. These full quality mixes with artwork are then downloadable for CD production anywhere in the world, with some kind of trust agreement. So we instantly become a global community record label with international distribution.
