fuck the word overrated pisses me off
when someone says something is overrated... i mean it basically just means that a lot of other people like it but not you
but it also has this undertone, like it implies that all those people who like it actually don't like it that much, they're just catching onto hype or something, and you know better, because your opinion is slightly superior
but maybe i'm just imagining things

in what way?

i've seen this written before, and i don't get it.
I dunno if its just me but I get an image of middle class goatee rocking students sitting in a silent room listening to their James Blake vinyls stroking their chins commenting on how the 'dynamic soundscapes are akin to a music illustration of broken Britain'

I'm not hating on his tunes but I feel sometimes he comprimises whats fun about listening to music in an attempt to sound 'different' and 'experimental'

its not that different or experinmental compared to whats out there?

imo, letting your percieved image of the people who listen to an artist stop you likeing that music, is worse then being pretentious. its like uberpretentiousness.
Exactly. It's barely experimental when put next to a lot of the more obscure dubstep people are pushing out these days. It's just all the chainsaw heads are calling it pretentious because it's the only non-wobble stuff they've encountered in the mainstream.

i think there's a difference between someone being overrated and someone getting a lot of appreciation, who's bigging him up? a bunch of promoters and record label heads or people who are listening to his music and enjoying it?

I can't even believe there is even a thread like this, its appalling...makes me begin to wonder if you fools are actually listening to the music or just new kids on the dubstep bandwagon...James Blake is an amazing producer, he has a completely different unique style that is unlike anyone in dubstep. He brings a jazzy blues sound to his tunes and unlike alot of producers were use to gives his tunes space to breath and develop, makes u wait just before he drops the bassline on you. His build-ups and just the overall sounds he uses are so different and refreshing. He uses his own vocals for alot of his tunes. How can you not love the sounds coming outta this guy?!!?

This is why I think he's overrated.

so you think he's overrated because when you call him overrated someone who likes his music gets defensive?

hmm. circular.

Both it seems. A few publications are over him like a rash.

people on the internet are always well defensive, especially if you go on the offensive first

for example: i like his music a lot, but imagine i made a "burial is shit" thread

the defense cases would be way worse and awkward than anything found in here

I haven't gone on an offensive though. And you missed my point.

I think he's the nuts....a few of his tracks haven't really done it for me, but in general I think he's great.

I do find it strange how journos & such pick these artists out to big up though....Thought the same with Joy Orbison. Don't get me wrong, I think they're incredible....but are they that much better than say Mala? Or Roska? Or Terror Danjah that they're getting all this publicity over them?

Hmmmmm...it's a thinker...

"over-rated" is usually way too ambiguous a notion to really be the basis for any type of productive discussion since it's just based off some sketchily perceived hype which probably varies a lot from site to site and person to person. blake makes music that is about 10 times more musical than most of the stuff on beatport's dubstep page, and he seems to be more into crafting songs than making beats or pushing buttons (he uses his own vocals, which is nice). fuck this shit-stirring thread, i love blake's music and his melancholy sensabilities. disregarding that Lil Wayne remix (wtf?) all his tracks are thoughtful and interesting.

Definitely not overrated, an acquired taste perhaps.
All I'm saying is his remix of Stop what you're doing is epic. Such a tune.
