What I *DID* do was in a R&D facility for Astaxanthin (its what makes certain seafood pigment Red). We used genetically engineered yeast cultures to "make" the pigment, which isn't natural for them. I fed them, broke down, cleaned, and re-installed the fermentation tanks (and God it stank to high-heaven), balanced pH, autoclaved equipment, took samples, streaked plates, etc etc etc... Basically all the manual labor the "real" scientists were too busy to do, which was fine, I worked alone in the lab at night, and on the weekends. Was the perfect job. Then I quit. Worst decision I've ever made.Intended Malice wrote:
What did you do? Specimen handler? I tried to break into that as I was doing my undergrad, to no avail; I didn't get anywhere in the field until I received my retainer in 2009. Which was subsequently rescinded as all hell broke loose. Apparently letters of recommendation, honors letter, training at prestigious Nobel laureate research institutes and vouches from PhD's were for naught. I had offers for (his) post-doc research by a professor in biochem, I had to turn it down as I was carrying 15 units that semester and I didn't feel like disappointing or slowing down the pace. Fuck academia.

Re: What do you do for a living?
This is exactly why I wanted to break into it during my undergrad, I thought I'd take my classes and labs during the morning get off around 4 or 5 eat and sleep until 9-11 go to work and study and get lab reports researched and written on my down time--it would only look like I'm working, anyhow, besides who would ask? The experience on a CV would have helped, too. (Not that matters now, as you may know.) From what I saw after I was given a tour of a lab at the place that extended an offer, most if not all of the under-staff were at a HS level, with no actual education/studies in the Life Sciences; I would have been glad to work for 9-10/hr, it was frustrating to see that at the time. Surely a CLS or lab director would benefit from having someone with an actual background on hand for misc tasks beyond the scope of just basic bench work.ketamine wrote:What I *DID* do was in a R&D facility for Astaxanthin (its what makes certain seafood pigment Red). Culture labs smell terrible, I have really bad allergies and it doesn't take much for my sinuses to block out smell and taste. So when I went with a clear nose and sinuses into my microbio lab for the first time I was gagging and my stomach was in knots within seconds of arriving. Everyday before that I never even noticed. I made it a habit to not take any allergy medicine that entire semester on lab days, I looked and felt terrible most days, but then I can't remember going to school and ever 'feeling good.' Drunk... perhaps, but never well.
Huh, you'd think with the reckless abandonment the FDA approve in food in the US they'd use some State subsidized Chinese fabricated food coloring, with high arsenic and mercury contents; I take this company wasn't well connected like Eli Lilly or some other grotesque blithe on humanity.

Actually that's kind of what they did--remember, we were only the R&D facility. The production was in Chile, Mexico, all parts South America, etc. Cheap labour and God know's what kind of ingredients/water...Intended Malice wrote:Huh, you'd think with the reckless abandonment the FDA approve in food in the US they'd use some State subsidized Chinese fabricated food coloring, with high arsenic and mercury contents

Mate if you ever want a year contract out here, let me know.. I'm always looking for like minded individuals with a decent (creative) head on their shoulders... Would be a year out of the scene back home, but you can always travel back during that time and the travel opportunities around Asia are immense (and cheap!).hackman wrote:hmmm that sounds tempting......sanjion wrote:Let me know if you ever want to move out to Indonesia.sebjx wrote:Primary school teacher. I'm the Director of Studies at an English Language Centre in Jakarta, Indonesia. Been out here 7 years. I teach as well as managing the school, recruiting teachers, sorting out their work permits, etc. And making sure that we deliver effective and worthwhile content in the classrooms. The money's good and I get an apartment with all the bills paid... I also teach High School GCSE English in the mornings.
Oh, and I run a Dubstep night.. which is more about how little we lose than how much we make... I also MC to Drum n' Bass, and do some Architecture Photography on the side: http://www.flickr.com/photos/graham_allain

Re: What do you do for a living?
Yeah, I must have omitted that, but I had surmised as much. I detest State agencies (rackets) and those who forcefully impose their mandates on what one can consume, while at the same time aiding and abetting poison pushers for Tamiflu and its variants to be sold and administered without any oversight or clinical trials. (This became more and more evident and commonplace in this profession as I was completing my studies.) Or simply throwing off a Scientist off the scrutiny panel because it doesn't fit with the State/BIg Pharma agenda like Eli Lilly did at its own decree.ketamine wrote:Actually that's kind of what they did--remember, we were only the R&D facility. Made a mental note never to use that product, ever.
Artificial food dye/coloring are almost unnecessary in my diet and I really don't have a problem with what others choose to put into their body and it if has a Market, so be it. But it is very telling when those affiliated with the project refuse to consume it themselves. I had something with MSG and HFCS for the first time in over a year on Wednesday, I had a terrible sharp metallic after taste lingering for the past two days, and a re-occurring stomach ache. I have hallucinated with MSG, that shit is a neurotoxin (inhibitor) but it was my fault for putting in my body in the first place.
