a lot of people can't be arsed, we have a shit tonne of choice in a our lives and most people (without a criminal record) can go wherever they want in this world. There have been those with ambition/vision and those without for centuries, it is not a product some new 'controlled' world, it just shows the variety in human society. i would have to agree. why shouldn't we work towards something? i'm not saying let's all become part of the machine, but even if you were living off the grid, through your own devices, you would still have to wake and work to get food, maintain your shelter, etc... we aren't entitled to anything just for being born, imho

really though, money is a good solution. it would be damn near impossible to barter for everything since the world is filled with so much specialized technology and skills. money is just a promissory note that directly equates to time spent working and your value as a worker, that you can later trade to another merchant for items.
