Re: This Is England '86
LOL is the most ironically named character in any TV program I've yet to come across.
Babylon Rocket.
Re: This Is England '86
Hoping for another series actually, realy enjoyed it. The abrupt ending would leave me to believe there's more story to be told.
Re: This Is England '86
I hope there won't be to be fair. Overall, wee bit disapointed at it all. Far to grim and not enough comedy. Loved Combos redemption, probably the best way for his character to end. Really liked Lol in the film too, now shes just turned into a drama queen. Highlight for me was Lol's sister though, more from her!!
Oh and Woody is an amazing character.

I really enjoyed the series. Yes its possible to find faults in it, but i try not to overly assess movies and TV too much. Do that with music so its nice to have something you like that you can sit back and enjoy for what it is and not feel the need to be a heavy critic.
Thought it was quite an emotionally powerful little series though, always like to watch something that touches on hard-hitting subjects like that. And I do like the way you'd be one minute you'd have a lump in your throat cos of what you've just witnessed, then it would cut to a funny bit, then right back to the grim shit again.
Although having watched Irreversible & Dog Pound only a few weeks ago and now this, i'm getting a bit sick of rape to be honest. Definately don't have it in me to be a rapist.

A few things that are still puzzling me: How did Combo know where Shauns new house was, how did the gang become friends with Harvey when they didnt know who he was in the film, how did Milky get more acting work, what was the real point of the biker gang, why didnt Kelly get her tits out, why the fuck did Woody wake up spooning Milky and why was we given a brief shitty montage as an ending.
Re: This Is England '86
Some of those don't need explaining though I think. A lot could happen in 3 years, though I don't see how Shaun could ever be mates with Harvey.faust.dtc wrote:A few things that are still puzzling me: How did Combo know where Shauns new house was, how did the gang become friends with Harvey when they didnt know who he was in the film, how did Milky get more acting work, what was the real point of the biker gang, why didnt Kelly get her tits out, why the fuck did Woody wake up spooning Milky and why was we given a brief shitty montage as an ending.
The biker gang was funny but that seems like a whole different program to the main rapey rapey theme. I could see that being part of a shitty longrunning skinsy kind of series- weirdly the only two good actors ever to be in skins were in this, and were actually good.
The ending was weird.
The main thing puzzling me is why I'm bothered about any of this. It's a tv program.
Re: This Is England '86
Yeah alot of unanswered questions. maybe could have done with another episode or something?! The biker gang should defo get their own serious tho!!faust.dtc wrote:A few things that are still puzzling me: How did Combo know where Shauns new house was, how did the gang become friends with Harvey when they didnt know who he was in the film, how did Milky get more acting work, what was the real point of the biker gang, why didnt Kelly get her tits out, why the fuck did Woody wake up spooning Milky and why was we given a brief shitty montage as an ending.

This is a very good point. I enjoyed both the film and the series but to be honest both are a bit over rated when I think about the actual quality of the content.therapist wrote:The main thing puzzling me is why I'm bothered about any of this. It's a tv program.

i'm sure combo could have asked people where shaun lived, wouldn't be that hard
the series is a number of years after the film, so surely it's not hard to imagine the group getting to know harvey in that time?

Re: This Is England '86
i think they put harvey in it because none of the other original cast who were part of the original gang chose to return
it still seems stupid why they seem to act like they've known him all his life though and it still seems stupid that combo's henchman is all friends with them

Referring to the scene with lol smashing her father round the head with the hammer; it seemed as though they were told to improvise the build up, didn't work very well imo

I thought the same, Lols improv came across pretty awkward at this point.Hibbie wrote:Referring to the scene with lol smashing her father round the head with the hammer; it seemed as though they were told to improvise the build up, didn't work very well imo

I thought that scene was excellent actually. The awkwardness brought a natural feel to the scene. Things don't go smoothly in real life.
what is of value and wisdom for one man seems nonsense to another.

None of the gang knew Combo was back and even if they did I doubt they would have told him Shauns address as they didnt like him. I doubt Combo was in any state to play detective with blood dripping from his head and him stumbling about.hackman wrote:i'm sure combo could have asked people where shaun lived, wouldn't be that hard
Even Smell didnt realise Shaun had moved, even after she was sitting in his new house. She was a bit thick though.
Just seemed like an odd addition to introduce to the gang. He didnt really have any substance, him getting beaten by his dad seem to be squeezed into the plot briefly and pointlessly.hackman wrote:the series is a number of years after the film, so surely it's not hard to imagine the group getting to know harvey in that time?
Just thought the story didnt gel well together.

Yeh yeh of course I know exactly what you mean but it seemed obvious that they were told to improvise, it seemed unnatural awkwardness if that makes sense, capo ultra wrote:I thought that scene was excellent actually. Re: This Is England '86
Yeah, didn't really get that. I think there were intentionally some red herrings though, and some bits like that were just showing everyone has their problems, even if they don't go into detail.faust.dtc wrote: He didnt really have any substance, him getting beaten by his dad seem to be squeezed into the plot briefly and pointlessly.
It seemed like they were trying to leave lots of potential directions for the story to go, and just didn't bother tieing up the loose ones.
