I'm interseted to find out what you think about all the mixes that are constanly put up on here then, surely buying a new dub then putting it in a mix for people to download here is having the same effect as sharing the mp3 on soulseek?

Mixes are the part of the scene. They are not having the same effect to my mind because many people buy certain releases after hearing them in the mixes.

Sorry, im playing devils advocate here but I dont hink that too much can be done about it.

Every genre of music has the same problem, there are alway going to be a minority(or in girmes case a mojority) of people that take and dont give back anyhting in return.

All you can do is make sure that there are enough ways for the people that geniunely want to buy the music to do so.

Yes. Put your track on your website as mp3 with a shopping cart, let me listen to it as a stream then buy it for a quid and bypass the label stuff. The reason I cane barefiles and record stuff off MySpace etc is to feed my desire for the stuff. When it hits Bleep I buy but it takes forever. I'd poke peoples eyes out to get hold of a high quality mp3 of Zomby spliff dub. Um, ok, bit harsh but I would definitely be keen!

i'd say start watermarking anything you put on myspace. for example: start adding wierd samples in the mp3, that won't be on the main release. loads of people are doing this in dnb, and as this small scene get's bigger, it's going to be harder and harder to police the rippers and soulseekers.

you have to be proactive, rather than reactive. you can't stop filesharing, but you can make it really frustrating for those that take advantage.

hey luke envoy, i dunno if your talking about me, but i ripped all your tunes from myspace and put them in a mix i did for some promoters in the ukraine, they really liked it, ive sent it out to loads of people and they like it to, if you want a copy let me know man, maybe we can listen to it together, i only live down the road man... piece ;0)

how about giving paul rose and luke a fiver each for the trouble.

watermark the tunes you put on myspace. it solves 60% of the problem straight away.

As far as I can see free mp3s of your tunes are not hurting people like Luke Envoy or myself or other artists of the same scale.

I'll try to keep this short. It's VERY VERY hard to make ANY money from 12" sales, ask anybody who actually does it. I am a working musician, no day job. I sell vinyl, CDs (to a lesser extent) and I do gigs. The money I make selling recordings is not worth mentioning. The money I make from gigs pays the rent and keeps the lights on.

In my mind there is absolutely no doubt that mp3 helps the gig process. Goes something like this: more people hear the tune, like it, recognize your name, turn up when they see you on a flier, party is full and cracking, you get a big response when you play a tune that people have heard before, promoter doesn't lose money, books you again, electric company doesn't turn off power, you keep making music.

I am actually seriously considering starting to give away a large portion of stuff online, for free, as I think there's a very good chance I would make more money doing it.

This equation clearly changes when you're selling CDs or more than a few thousand copies. Up till then though, as the artist, you can watch labels, distros, shops keep any profit generated by your tunes on 12" and hope that you get booked because of it.

just keep the mp3s at a shite bit rate... no matter what u do they will always rip shit....trust me!!! i find my music on all p2p programes. the way i look at it onec the tune has sold and there are no copies left... its all promotion, but while the track is out on dub or just gone to press then your looking to get your teeth knocked out!

i am gonna go ahead and take the plunge and say that i downloaded a few tunes off slsk after a discussion on a uk based techno forum gave me the heads up on dubstep.

i liked what i heard, and have tracked down everything i can get my hands on. most of it has been mp3s (thank goddess for www.bleep.com), but if my local shop can get it, i will buy it.

do i think there are those who download and don't buy? sure. but those of us who care about the artists and the quality will shell out our hard-earned cash for the goods.

we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming while we go shrink our wallets for the entire tectonic and boka catalogue...

for real.... if you like listening to mp3 rips from myspace, you're dumb. the compression is awful.
