Well, example clearly is so much better at writing lyrics than Jehst cause he writes about like holding a girls hand and love kickstarting or something.

You know that real important life experience stuff.

He just said Example is better than Jehst...definitely 12.
Example lyrics:
Come to play, here to talk,
Or are they here to simply show,
Sense of danger, bunch of strangers,
Simply starin' 'cross the room,
Pretty soon they'll taste the water,
And it ought to change their tune.

Shut the doors, the room is full,
And nobody leaves until,

Until the sun comes out to play,
Until then we blow ourselves away.
At the markets of Gibraltar,
They lock up your sons and daughters,
But the reason they come back,
Is what's been pouring out the tap.

I see them laugh, I see them cry,
Been coming here since days gone by,
Come to fight, here to shout,
Or are they here to simply pout.
Lack of passion, only fashion,
People glancin' 'cross the room,
Pretty soon they'll taste the water,
And it ought to change their tune.
To me very good, beautiful lyrics on a real poetic level. Not going out to get the most difficult/complicated sounding words, it's just real.

Jehst lyrics:
So when I'm fed up I get red up
Mary Jane messed my head up
She can be my best friend forever
At times I regret that I met her
When she eats all my cheddar
But she makes life seem better
Like whatever
Stressin' me out she settles me down
Put it in the air bredder spread it around
But don't abuse it
We use it to temple ball
From Nepal there's a mental drawl
Meditated like we're mental
Just the way God intended
When I pick up the pencil and scrawl the splendid
I used to use cigarette mix and blend it
Now I don't tend to ping everybody offended
If they criticise weed defend it
A crystallised tide yo' glistenin'
Blow my mind like nitro-glycerine
This is the deal
All day every day give you something to feel

Peripheral switch to weed with spliffs and shit
And cigs remove the twig
That's the life of the breathing tip
With king slims and choice blends to no end
High kyer fire burnin' sex with friends
But I burn it with a precedent
A broken men
Street soldier strutting out of with the leafy stem
High fliers with a focus loads of Bush and pain
Knock it on to the punters and they're back again
Buy cheap sell high and subsidise what you buy
Still I walk straight through this crimson tide
Yet you all polluters don't know what one hit could provide
Best just step aside I take a poetic glide
We're off into the stratosphere
Eyes too glazed
I'm being slayed from the potency
Toxicated commodity my property
Medicated with E's the weed flows through my blood stream
To me again very good lyrics don't get me wrong, but just not on the same level, it doesn't feel 'real'. I don't get any emotion from it, it's just word play.

It might be just a matter of taste, but I tell you most writers I know would say straight up Example is the better writer and lyricist.

Is it objective now then? How is it measured?

Pretty sure Example has a team of ghost writers, does Jehst?
Does he fuck.

Pretty sure Example has a studio team dedicated to producing hits just for him (besides the Skream effort), does Jehst?
Does he fuck, he sits in peoples attics making beats on an MPC, the way real hip hop has been made for years...

That is Jehst not giving a fuck about you and your opinion, much like anyone with good taste in wholesome, traditional UK hip hop.

Example is to UKHH what Skrillex is to dubstep...

Loads of my old school mates fell in love with Ed Sheeran, now they all "love" grime. Then you get in their cars and their N-Dubz CD comes on and you have to listen to them go on about how it's actually "really good" and the lyrics are so "real." Ed Sheeran should stick to pop music rather than getting a bunch of fakers involved in an underground scene!

xarcane wrote:Yeah that Juggaknots track is the one I liked best out of the three. I didn't say they were all shit, just when Ed Sheeran is playing, most grime MCs that usually just talk greeze and hype feel compelled to speak truth, and that to me is why it's one of the best things to come out of grime. That's why I'd prefer to listen to it than Jehst, not because Jehst isn't talented.

Mate...what Jehst does is lyracism. Word play. Sometimes it takes listen upon listen to decifer what they mean.

Look at guys like DOOM...these guys can spit straight conversational lyrics, but a lot of the time they chat riddles. Why? Because they can. Is this superior to story telling? No. Ghostface/Raekwon/Slick Rick are three of the greatest MCs of all time...why? For their story telling ability.

What I'm saying is, we're not claiming Jehst is better because he doesn't spit conversational bars...he's better because he does what he does incredibly well, and Example does not. Go check Klashnekoff and Skinnyman. I think you'll like them...two of the best UK MCs. Hip Hop, Grime or otherwise....and they are story tellers..if you will.

You can't say Example is shit, lots of people consider (falsely) Devlin to be the best grime MC, yet on this track the common consensus is that Example is the best spitter on the track, so he has at least some level of skill.

And a team of ghost writers? Example is a national award winning poet from an early age, a properly talented writer. What Jehst does, literally any intelligent guy could do. That's the difference between them. Honestly my girl is a poet too, and runs poetry events - who's the better writer, she'd say Example. I could give these lyrics to a girl I know who was president of the Oxford Union poetry society, she would 100% say Example is the better writer. I'm not exactly ignorant of this either, I've been on stage with people like Akala and Swiss to spit poetry. I know hiphop, I know writing, and Example has got more talent than Jehst. Honestly if I go to any classically trained writer

This:
You're my favourite bad habit
It's stupid
We never ever listen to Cupid
We're about as well suited as Roger
And Jessica Rabbit
And I wish I could have it
Just that little bit closer to some normality
Haven't we gone to many lengths, pennies spent
Still we don't make any sense
Either as friends or as a couple
If I said that I loved you I'd be lying to us both
The only thing we know how to do is just fuck
And you're just like a drug but it's never enough
See I tell myself its proper but we're anything but
We're just a couple of kids who got drunk at a party
And later that night I undressed you like Barbie
The very next morning we both should have left it
A night is a night but we just didn't accept it
Or this convoluted ting:
Who's a loveable rogue known to compose colourful prose?
I'm on the road 'til my foot prints cover the globe
I speak low with a lump in my throat, and a lung full a smoke
Bunnin' dope in my humble abode, it's bohemia
Sepia tone memorabilia, soak up the media
Daytime TV's gettin' kinda tedious
Trapped with the social deviants
In the confines of my immediate
future is fruitless
I'm through duckin' shooters
Dust so thick it dates back to the Tudors
Livin' in student digs on tins of tuna
Who spent the rent down the boozer?
We sip beers and split hairs over current-affairs
Any unwelcome guests get chucked down the stairs
The place where I pedal my wares
All the fun of the fair
B-boys hold down the square, it goes
They're both good, but the first is by far the more superior piece.

exactly the point of grime! it's not supposed to be easy listening coffee table fodder to show your nan. if anything this music is uk hip hop. what's grime about it?

have to agree with you that i don't like hype vocals but that's why i love grime instrumentals. if i listened to instrumentals of this i think i'd fall asleep

I just wrote a massive paragraph on how I think you're talking tosh. But quite frankly, it's pointless. Example is the best MC out there. You're correct.

Ere, who remembers when Andy Cole decided to rap? Man, that guy could spit.

In fact...xarcane I beg you go over to grimeforum and start a thread informing them of your grand theory...

Once you have done this, please supply us with the thread link. I've always wondered what the ultimate burn might be...good chance of that providing it.

It's pointless this, the only analogy I can pull out is this is comparable to trying to explain to a load of music "elitists" why someone like Laura Marling is better musically than the fretwankery of DragonForce/random prog metal band, it just goes to the heart of art.

Writing real shit leaves less space for the lyrical equivalent of fretwankery that Jehst does. Although technically very good, to me it's like listening to someone playing some bare long complicated solo during a shit power-chord based song. This is these two talking on the same theme of nuclear and this is how they do it.

Jehst:

Example (starts at 0:46):

Jehst's might seem technically more complex, but to me Example's is at a higher standard, literally for the same reasons I've given above. Jehst does too much lyrical fretwankery like Dragonforce, Example's is just real talk.
