bit embarrassed to ask this, but i guess that's the point in this thread!
basically, my sub bass interferes with my hats really bad sometimes. it doesn't always happen, but sometimes it seems to. i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. i use fl studio, and i put parametric EQ 2 on them both and try to sort it that way, but i don't know exactly what to do.

Do your hats "duck" when the sub is hitting?

are you hipassing the hats?

Do your hats "duck" when the sub is hitting?

my hats go really fuzzy when the sub hits. not sure of the technical or slang term for it.

and I've honestly never really learned about highpassing and lowpassing and what not.

Just sounds like the sub is to loud!

fuzzy in what way?
soft, overpowered, noisy?
is it not just a case of your sub overpower your mix?
If you`re not to clued up on eqing it could be your problem.

ahh i figured it out, i highpassed the hats and lowpassed the sub. i googled how exactly to do it, and got this wonderful site: http://howtomakeelectronicmusic.com/introduction-to-eq just incase anyone has the same question as me or something.

cpu usage... and each eq has its own idiosyncrasies ..

pretty much yeah but each eq/filter has its own specific curves, get a spectrum analyser and get some different eqs and filters and play around and see how it affects it.

whats the best way to get rid of the high pitched sound when using a bitcrusher? Ive tried filtering and EQ'ing and it always loses that full-bodied sound when EQ or filter out the high pitched soudn the bitcrushing adds. any ideas?

But if I highpass 30 hz and higher, it's still a downward slope so 30 hz will still be there. Is that the right way to do it? Because right now I'm using Abletons EQ 8 which I think has a 12 db cut per octave. I know I should probably figure this out myself.

you will always get a slope then filtering like that, you will not get a vertical line exactly at the cut off (you might get close but it would have to be like a 100 pole filter lol)

are you using fruitys parametric EQ 2? you can change how "steep" the cut off gradient is by right clicking on the node.

No I'm using Ableton's EQ 8.

Don't use Abletons EQ8, its an EQ not a filter. As Ldizzy said, each EQ affects sound differently (EQ8 is pretty bad imo). Get your hands on a free EQ VST or use Abletons other basic EQ (the one with just the knobs). The problem with this is your trying to do something very scientific and most built in EQ's and FX are designed to be musical. they say their doing something, and it sounds like their doing that something but often their doing something else entirely.

For example, I noticed last week that hi-passing live hats at 10k using Logic's channel EQ has the effect of actually raising the volume of them despite having remove quite alot of signal below the 10k mark and having no resonance or Q.
